15 men, 13 women arrested for illegal gambling activities

Fifteen men and 13 women have been arrested for their suspected involvement in illegal gambling activities, said the police in a news release on Tuesday (27 November).

The suspects, aged between 37 and 85, were nabbed in a two-day operation conducted by the Central Police Division over 23 and 24 November.

Five men and two women were arrested along Race Course Road for illegal bookmaking and punting. Cash amounting to $12,781 was seized during the bust.

Separately, 10 men and 11 women were arrested along Jalan Besar and Temple Street for offences under the Common Gaming Houses Act. Gambling paraphernalia were seized during this operation.

Investigations against the suspects are ongoing.

Any person who bets with a bookmaker is liable upon conviction to a jail term of up to six months or a fine of up to $5,000. Those convicted of being involved in illegal bookmaking face a jail term of up to five years and a fine of between $20,000 and $200,000.

Persons found guilty of gaming in public shall be liable to a jail term of up to six months, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.
