A 16-year-old student from Chong Boon Secondary School died on Tuesday morning (1 August) during a physical education (PE) lesson.

The boy collapsed after a 2.4km run, according to a report by The New Paper. He has been identified as Benjamin Sim, 16.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) got a call at 8.15am from the school, which is located in Ang Mo Kio St 44, and sent a fire bike and an ambulance. School staff members administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the boy when the call was made, the SCDF said.

On the way to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, SCDF paramedics continued with CPR while hospital staff were told to be on standby to receive the boy.

Police got a call from the hospital at 11.44am that a 16-year-old boy had been pronounced dead. They are investigating the unnatural death.

In response to Yahoo News Singapore’s queries, Chong Boon Secondary School principal Yeo Kuerk Heng confirmed that Benjamin had collapsed after completing a run during a PE lesson. The school was “deeply saddened” by his passing, said Yeo.

“Benjamin was well regarded and popular among his peers, and was especially known for his cheerful and friendly disposition. He participated actively in class and in his Volleyball CCA. He was also good in English and helped his friends weaker in the subject.”

“School leaders, staff and counsellors are providing emotional support and assistance to Benjamin’s family, affected students and staff. As the case is under police investigation, we are unable to comment further.”
