An Iowa teen who recently graduated high school is being remembered as “a tremendous kid” after he drowned in a local lake.

Crews responded to the scene at Rathbun Lake in Moravia on Wednesday, June 26, after learning a 17-year-old swimmer “went under the water and had not resurfaced,” according to a news release from the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office.

The teen’s body was found in about 15 to 20 feet of water about an hour after he was reported missing.

The victim has since been identified as Aydon Beeson of Centerville, a recent graduate of Central Centerville High School, according to CBS affiliate KCCI and ABC affiliate KTVO.

Beeson's tennis coach Tyler Baze described the young man as “a natural leader” who kids would gravitate toward, per KCCI.

“He led by example, and he wasn't going to ask his teammates to do anything that he wasn't willing to do himself," Baze explained.

In a statement, Centerville Community Schools said Beeson played football and tennis, “and was elected Prom King by his peers.” He also spent summers as a maintenance worker for the school district “helping to prepare our buildings for each fall.”

“Words cannot express the depth of the sadness felt by the school community in this horrible tragedy,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with Ayden’s family and friends as they work through this tragic event.”

A vigil for Beeson was held Thursday at the football field where he once played, according to KCCI.

"I know so many people in this community that they were going to be (at the vigil) no matter what,” Baze said, “and it's just a testament to the kind of kid and person that he was."
