Two men have been charged in connection to the felling of England's iconic Sycamore Gap tree.

The Crown Prosecution Service issued a press release on Tuesday, April 30, announcing that the Northumbria Police will charge Daniel Graham, 38, and Adam Carruthers, 31, with causing criminal damage after the tree was cut down in September 2023.

According to the press release, the men have also been charged with causing criminal damage to Hadrian's Wall, located in the area where the tree once stood. They were ordered to appear in Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on May 15.

The Northumbria Police posted an update on Facebook stating that the men were originally arrested last October in connection with the tree's felling and had been on bail since then.

"We recognise the strength of feeling the felling has caused, however we would remind people to avoid speculation, including online, which could impact the ongoing case," the update read.

The scenic tree became a popular tourist spot after it appeared in the 1991 movie Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman.

In a press release in December, the Northumbria Police "reaffirmed" its commitment to investigating the tree's felling, noting that a man in his 60s had previously been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage but would no longer face further police action.

Apart from moving the tree, the National Trust, a conversation charity, and Northumberland National Park collected seeds from it to grow at a conservation center.

According to a press release from the Northumberland National Park in March, the material "is beginning to spring into life."
