3 Body Problem will come to an end after its third season.

On Friday, May 31, Netflix announced at a FYSEE panel that the science fiction series based on books by Liu Cixin will conclude after its third installment is released. So far, only one season of 3 Body Problem has aired on Netflix.

3 Body Problem's eight-episode first season begins in 1960s China, as a young astrophysicist (Zine Tseng) makes a pivotal decision that impacts the future.

The story skips ahead several decades, to when a team of scientists and a detective are working together in the 21st century to stop a time and space-altering event from destroying humanity.

"We included a lot of what we loved from the [novels by Liu Cixin] in Season 1, but the vast majority of reasons we wanted to make this show are in Season 2,” executive producer and Game of Thrones alum D.B. Weiss said in the press release on Friday.

"We always wanted to get to the final page of the third book, and it’s really, really thrilling to us that we will get to do just that," he added.

Weiss, True Blood's Alexander Woo and David Benioff will continue to serve as executive producers, showrunners and writers through seasons 2 and 3, per Netflix.

The creators previously spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about their plans for future seasons and how they planned to adapt all three of the novels in Cixin's trilogy in full.

"We knew going into this how many hours we need to tell the rest of the story because we’ve got a roadmap through to the end," Weiss told the outlet. "And we have what we need to get to the end as intended from when we started."

"By the time we finish with the show, it will be seven years we've devoted to it," Benioff added. "We're now at a place where we get to tell the rest of the story, and, yes, we have enough time to tell the rest of the story the way we want to and that's immensely gratifying."

The show, which was one of Netflix's most-streamed series of the past year after it was released on March 21, spent seven weeks on the streamer's global Top 10 list, THR reported.
