The incident, which has also left an infant in critical condition, occurred on Saturday afternoon, authorities said

Three victims, including a child, have died in a solo vehicle collision with pedestrians in San Francisco, according to authorities.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the city’s West Portal neighborhood when a driver crashed into a bus shelter, the San Francisco Police Department said in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Police responded to the scene at around 12:13 p.m. where they “located multiple victims suffering from injuries.” Despite first-aid efforts, two victims could not be saved and they were declared dead at the scene.. One of the victims was a child, according to ABC News and the Associated Press.

Three others who suffered injuries in the crash were transported to the hospital. The driver of the white Mercedes SUV that crashed into the victims was among those hospitalized, according to local media outlet the San Francisco Chronicle.

Police confirmed in an update posted on X on Sunday that a third person, a woman, died from her injuries at the hospital. “An infant is still suffering from life-threatening injuries," they added.

Authorities said that they “learned that the driver of the vehicle was traveling eastbound Ulloa Street when they crashed into a bus stop at the intersection of Ulloa Street and Lenox Way.”

“This incident was a heartbreaking tragedy,” the police continued in their original statement. “The SFPD offers its deepest condolences to the victims, their families and loved ones, and everyone at the scene who witnessed and assisted first responders.”

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, though authorities said on Sunday they do not believe it was a result of traffic engineering. 

The San Francisco Police Department and San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency are investigating the incident, per ABC.

According to the Chronicle, the advocacy group Walk San Francisco will hold a vigil for the victims at the scene of the incident on Monday evening.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed visited the site of the crash on Saturday.

“Today there was a tragic collision in West Portal. Two lives were lost, including a child. Three more are in the hospital," Breed wrote on X. “I just visited the scene and it is heartbreaking, We will share more information when we can, but now our focus is on the victims and their families.”
