5 arrested in connection with fatal shooting of man on Montreal's South Shore

Five people have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man back in January in Saint-Lambert on Montreal's South Shore.

Gabriel Lauzier was found seriously injured by gunshot wounds in the outdoor parking lot of the Saint-Lambert commuter train station. He died in hospital hours later.

The suspects arrested Wednesday after a six-month investigation include two men, ages 18 and 19, who will appear at the Longueuil courthouse Thursday to face charges of second-degree murder, aggravated larceny, pointing a firearm and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Longueuil police say three accomplices, a 20-year-old man and two 17-year-olds, a boy and a girl, were also arrested and could face the same charges. .

Police spokesperson Ghyslain Vallières says the fatal shooting occurred during a transaction related to a small amount of drugs and vaping accessories.

He says gratuitous violence is becoming a trend among young people in North America.

"It's a thing that we have seen happen since the last seven to eight years," he said.

"The young teenagers and the young adults, they don't measure exactly what they're going to get involved in if they go [down] that track."

Vallières says the two primary suspects in this case could be sentenced to between 14 and 25 years in prison if found guilty.

He says police will now focus their efforts on the legal proceedings and work closely with Quebec's Crown prosecutors' office to "ensure that justice is done."
