5 things to know for June 3: Mexico election, Hunter Biden trial, Trump convicted, Middle East, Trash balloons

The arrival of Monday can trigger stress if you ruminate on the busy week ahead — but don’t despair. A few simple, mood-boosting practices can help you harness anxiety and transform it into something useful.

Here’s what else you need to know to Get Up to Speed and On with Your Day.

1. Mexico election

Mexico will elect its first woman president after millions headed to the polls Sunday. Claudia Sheinbaum from the leftist Morena party is projected to win the country’s largest election, defeating Xochitl Gálvez from the opposition coalition. More than 20,000 government positions are also set to be filled after a campaign cycle marred by violence. Since June 2023, at least 34 political candidates or applicants have been killed by criminal organizations seeking to influence those with power. The vote also comes just months before the US presidential election, where immigration is a key topic.

2. Hunter Biden trial

Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, will go on trial for gun-related charges today. He is accused of illegally purchasing and possessing a gun while abusing or being addicted to drugs, a violation of federal law. Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to the charges, though he has been open about his struggles with alcohol and crack cocaine. This is the first time in American history that the child of the sitting president is going on trial — and could potentially impact President Biden’s reelection bid. If convicted on all three counts, the president’s son could face up to 25 years in prison.

3. Trump convicted

Former President Donald Trump said he is “OK” with serving potential jail time or being under house arrest following his historic conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. “I’m OK with it,” Trump told Fox News in an interview that aired Sunday. But, Trump added, “I think it would be tough for the public to take, you know, at a certain point, there’s a breaking point.” A Manhattan jury last week found Trump guilty of all charges in his hush money trial, making him the first former president to become a convicted felon. In an attempt to appeal to younger voters, Trump has also joined TikTok — the social media platform with ties to China that he had railed against as president. The Biden campaign, for its part, also has a presence on TikTok even as the Biden administration has supported a nationwide TikTok ban.

4. Middle East

Two far-right Israeli ministers have threatened to resign and bring down the governing coalition of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he accepts a peace proposal laid out by President Biden. Biden unveiled on Friday what he said was a three-phase Israeli proposal to end the conflict in Gaza that would pair a release of hostages with a “full and complete ceasefire.” Biden said Hamas had been degraded to a point where it could no longer carry out the type of attack seen on October 7 that launched the current war in Gaza. However, the two Israeli ministers made it clear they reject an immediate ceasefire. Netanyahu has also signaled he is not ready either, casting doubt over Biden’s proposal.

5. Trash balloons

North Korea said it will stop sending trash-filled balloons to South Korea after Seoul reported hundreds more airborne waste deliveries floating across the border. North Korea’s vice-defense minister claimed the trash balloons were “strictly a responsive act” to South Korea’s yearslong practice of sending balloons with anti-North Korea leaflets the other way. Kim Jong Un’s sister Kim Yo Jong — a senior official in the reclusive North Korean regime — called the balloons “sincere presents.” A South Korean official pledged his country would take “unendurable measures” against its neighbor for sending more balloons over the weekend, which will be “specified in the coming days.”
