7 Kids, 2 Adults Injured After Day Care Van Collided with Semi-Truck

The accident occurred along a residential road in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday, June 19

At least nine people, including seven children, were injured when a day care van and a semi-truck collided head-on in Iowa, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 2 p.m. local time on Wednesday, June 19, on a residential street in West Des Moines, West Des Moines Police told local NBC affiliate WHO 13 and CBS affiliate KCCI-TV.

"Apparently the driver was distracted and veered into the lanes of the semi and they had a head-on collision," West Des Moines Police Sgt. Adam Porath said to KCCI.

The nine victims were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, Porath added.

“So we like to say apparent minor injury because we weren’t doing lifesaving procedures on anyone at the scene,” Porath said. “So I don’t know specific injuries, but it doesn’t appear that anyone has life threatening injuries.”

ABC affiliate WOI-DT reported that the van was carrying 10 children, whose ages were not immediately known. Additionally, the truck driver had a passenger with them.

It had recently rained in the area, according to news footage from the scene, but it is not known if weather played a role in the crash. Police do not believe the day care van driver was distracted by a cell phone.

Both vehicles suffered extensive front-end damage, despite the semi taking evasive actions in the moment before the crash, Porath said.

The impact of the crash resulted in spilled diesel fuel from the truck, and authorities closed the road for several hours to clean up the mess.

A representative from the West Des Moines Police Department did not immediately return PEOPLE’s request for additional information.
