7-Year-Old Boy Among 4 People Killed in Fla. Pile-Up That Left 6 Others Hospitalized

The deadly crashes happened in the early morning hours of July 1

A 7-year-old boy has been listed as one of four people killed in an early morning Florida crash that left several others injured.

The fatal incident happened on I-95 in Indian River County at approximately 2:15 a.m. on Monday, July 1, per a Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles statement obtained by PEOPLE. Authorities did not release the identities of the crash victims.

The crash, which involved five vehicles and 11 people, happened northbound near mile marker 153. Local news stations showed video footage of the northbound lanes closed as authorities were present at the scene.

Northbound traffic was closed for hours, with traffic being diverted off at SR-60 (exit 147), the press release said.

The multi-car collision began when a 37-year-old Miami resident operating a Toyota Camry rear-ended a Suzuki Vitara driven by a 40-year-old man from Miami. The impact from the woman’s vehicle caused both vehicles to become disabled on the highway.

Soon after, a 40-year-old Palm Bay woman driving a Dodge Journey collided with the Suzuki. Passengers in her car included a 7-year-old boy, a 2-month-old boy, a 9-year-old girl, a 5-year-old girl and a 42-year-old man.

The drivers of the Toyota Camry and the Suzuki Vitara got out of their vehicles to help those in the Dodge.

While still on the road, the two drivers were attempting to assist the individuals in the Dodge Journey when a Freightliner semi traveling northbound struck the left side of the Dodge.

The hit caused the Dodge Journey to go northeast toward the shoulder, and one occupant was ejected from the vehicle.

The Freightliner struck and killed the Camry and Suzuki drivers.

The driver of the Freightliner semi is a 63-year-old man from Miami. After colliding with the two vehicles and ending up in the median, the pile-up continued when a Chrysler Pacifica attempted to swerve and miss the wreckage, but hit the Toyota Camry.

The semi driver was later released from the scene once authorities arrived.

Two people were inside the Chrysler, a 27-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman from Ontario, Canada. Both were taken to a hospital.

Of those in the Dodge Journey, four were hospitalized. The 7-year-old boy and the 40-year-old driver died.

A 42-year-old man, a 5-year-old boy, a 2-month-old boy and a 9-year-old girl from Palm Bay were in stable condition at St. Mary's Hospital.
