Eight men are in police custody in India after allegedly gang-raping a foreign tourist and assaulting her husband, authorities said.

The couple, who have not been identified by police, were on a motorcycle trip in India's eastern state of Jharkhand when they were found on a roadside by local police on Friday, according to CNN and NBC News. According to Reuters, police said it looked like the couple had suffered an assault.

Pitamber Singh Kherwar, the superintendent of Dumka police, said the couple were taken to a local hospital, where the woman told investigators that she had been raped, NBC News reported.

Dumka police announced in a Sunday post on X, formerly Twitter, that three unnamed male suspects who allegedly “raped a foreign woman and assaulted her husband under Hansdiha police station area” were arrested on Friday.

Police said the couple were spending the night in a tent in the area, according to the Press Trust of India.

In a follow up post shared to X on Tuesday, Dumka police said a total of eight suspects had been taken into custody in connection with the alleged incident.

According to CNN, the couple were vloggers and had talked about the alleged incident in a video posted to their shared Instagram account, which reportedly has more than 250,000 followers. PEOPLE is not sharing the couple’s names since the video has since been deleted.

India’s National Commission for Women condemned the alleged attack in a post on X Saturday.

“NCW condemns the brutal gang-rape of a Spanish tourist in Dumka, Jharkhand. NCW has been informed that [the] accused fled from the spot, " it said. "As per reports, there were 8-10 men involved. The Police have just arrested 3 accused persons in the matter.”
