Minear told Entertainment Weekly why the beloved character "had" to die, saying the storyline had to have "a casualty that mattered".

"For me, Agent Casey is a character whose heart was in the right place.... As a storyteller, you want it to be impactful – and you want to affect somebody where it's going to matter, to your main character. So that is why she had to go," he revealed.

Minear said that he would have "loved to have kept Amanda around" and that he did have some regret around his decision by the time the episode was filmed, but that ultimately she had to go.

Schull, known for her performance as Katrina Bennett in hit legal series Suits, joined 9-1-1 Lone Star in the role of Agent Casey last year for the fourth series of the show.

She was introduced as an FBI agent investigating the Honor Dogs at the same time Owen Strand (Rob Lowe) has become involved with the organisation.

Recent episodes saw Agent Casey angered by Strand as the pair disagreed over how the case should be handled, with Casey irritated with him for revealing sensitive information about the case.

9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star both air on FOX and Hulu in the US and Sky Witness in the UK.
