This season in everything-old-is-new-again, the ‘90s are back — and I’m pretty excited about it.
As someone who lived through the ‘90s as a pre-teen with a $100 clothing allowance for the school year, I wasn’t always able to partake in the trends I saw my friends wearing in elementary and middle school. (Considering my obsession with the 34-inch bell bottoms from the Delia’s catalog, that’s probably for the best.) But this time around, I’m in my 30s and have enough disposable income to incorporate some of the best ‘90s fashion trends into my wardrobe.
Of course, not all ‘90s trends are primed for a revival: I could probably do without overalls, slap bands and camouflaged everything. But there are a few that I can’t stop seeing as I scroll — and then buying and wearing over and over. Never mind that they’ve been re-popularized by celebrities that were barely alive in the decade (see: Bella Hadid, Zendaya, Olivia Rodrigo, Addison Rae), these are easy to adopt no matter your age.
Ahead, the three very wearable ‘90s trends worth trying this season.
Cargo
Probably the most divisive of ’90s trends that I’m currently obsessed with, cargo pants combine two of the decade’s most-beloved styles: baggy jeans and a lot of pockets. While you can wear cargo pants — or its sister trend, the cargo skirt — with a baby tee and flatforms á la every Teen Beat beat circa 1995, dip your toe in the trend by pairing it with a ribbed top and sneakers.
With Jéan Tommy Zipper Cargo Pant, $160 (Orig. $229)
Tiger Mist Lincoln Midi Skirt, $30 (Orig. $55)
The Frankie Shop Hailey Oversized Cotton Cargo Pants, $285
Lioness Miami Vice Swish Pants, $99
Sanctuary Flashback Cargo Pant, $109
Low-Rise Maxi Skirts
There’s not much about maxi skirts that are inherently ’90s, but when you wear yours below your belly button, it feels reminiscent of decades past. If you don’t want to show your midriff, pair your low-rise maxi skirt with a shirt or tank that hits at the hip.
Tiger Mist Jules Maxi Skirt, $30 (Orig. $50)
Princess Polly Karley Low Waist Maxi Skirt, $50
Aya Muse x REVOLVE Knit Skirt, $377
SNDYS Melody Skirt, $53.69
Heart Details
While there’s something vaguely infantilizing about heart charms, it’s not hard to wear the trend like a grown-up. Opt for a simple heart pendant necklace, or get in on it with a heart-adorned belt.
Martine Ali Averi Love Necklace, $310
Ana Luisa Lev Silver Heart Necklace, $55.25 (Orig. $65)
Mejuri Heart Enamel Pendant, $178
Timeless Pearly Emerald Crystal Heart Ring, $284
