911 Call Details Moments After Siblings Were Swallowed by Sand Hole: 'My Daughter Is In There'

Sloan Mattingly, 7, died after she and her brother became trapped while digging a hole on a beach in Florida, according to authorities

Newly-released audio reveals the moments after two children were swallowed up by a sand hole while digging on a beach in Florida on Tuesday.

Sloan Mattingly, 7, and her brother Maddox, 9, became trapped while digging a hole in the sand near 4424 El Mar Drive in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

The young girl was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where she later died, the BCSO said.

A bystander who called 911 said the incident occurred on the beach in front of the High Noon Beach Resort in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. Several people can be heard screaming in the audio, shared by NBC affiliate WTVJ.

“There’s a child that they’re trying to get out,” the individual said at the beginning of the call. She told dispatch that she initially heard the children’s father “yelling for help because his child is caught in a hole in the sand.”

While speaking with the dispatcher, the caller said the mom began yelling, “My daughter’s in there.”

“Everybody’s screaming,” the caller added.

Cellphone footage from another bystander, also shared by WTVJ, showed a large crowd of people around the hole.

Sloan and Maddox were on vacation with their parents from Indiana when the deadly incident occurred, according to the BCSO.

Maddox was also hospitalized after being freed and was initially listed in critical condition, according to WTVJ. His current condition is unclear.

It is also unclear how long the children were buried. Sandra King, a spokesperson for Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, told WTVJ that rescuers used support boards to keep the hole, which was about 5 to 6 feet deep, from collapsing during the rescue.

Sally Krouse, who organized a GoFundMe campaign for Sloan’s family, said the 7-year-old’s mother Therese described the incident as “a freak accident.”

“What started as an amazing family trip quickly turned into the devastatingly tragic loss,” Krouse wrote in the description of the online fundraiser, which has raised more than $33,000 as of Thursday afternoon.

Added Krouse, "We know that no amount of money will bring beautiful Sloan back, but your donation can help bring Sloan home from Florida, cover funeral costs and ease the financial stress as they learn to navigate their new world."
