Abbotsford man sentenced to life in prison for wife's 2022 murder

A B.C. man has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to his wife's murder in their Abbotsford home in 2022, police say.

Inderjit Singh Sandhu, then 48 years old, pleaded guilty in April to second-degree murder in the death of 45-year-old Kamaljit Kaur Sandhu. The plea followed a higher charge of first-degree murder.

Second-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence under the Criminal Code.

Sandhu is not eligible for parole for 13 years, B.C.'s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said in a media release Thursday.

Sandhu's sentencing came almost two years after Abbotsford police found the victim with critical injuries at her home on the 2900 block of Eastview Street on July 28, 2022, according to IHIT. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim died of her injuries.

Sandhu was arrested on the scene and taken into custody, IHIT said. They had two children, who were aged 16 and 21 at the time.
