Abdul Rahman Ya’kub, former Sarawak governor, dies

Former Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’kub (pic) died at 9.30pm today at the Normah Medical Specialist Centre in Petra Jaya, Kuching.

Rahman, Sarawak’s fourth governor, is believed to have died of old age. He celebrated his 87th birthday just six days ago.

He was the third chief minister of Sarawak, from July 1970 to March 1981, during which he was appointed to tackle the communist insurgency in the state.

He was also the uncle of present Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud.

His eldest daughter, Norah, is Tanjong Manis MP. – January 9, 2014.
