Tribeca Festival 2024 Competition Winners Include ‘Griffin in Summer,’ ‘Bikechess,’ ‘Hacking Hate’ – Film News in Brief
Tribeca Festival has announced the 2024 winners of its competition categories at an awards ceremony at Racket NYC. Top awards went to “Griffin in Summer,” which took home the Founders Award for best U.S narrative feature, “Bikechess,” which won best international narrative feature and “Hacking Hate,” which was honored with best documentary feature.
“After a banner year of Tribeca programming, I do not envy our jurors’ task of selecting this year’s winners,” said Tribeca festival director and SVP of programming Cara Cusumano. “I’m delighted to see they’ve chosen to honor a diverse, international, adventurous group of films that truly reflect the Tribeca spirit. We can’t wait to continue to follow and support all these films’ journeys into the world.”

Hollywood Climate Summit Launches Film and Television Marketplace
The Hollywood Climate Summit has launched the Hollywood Climate Summit Film and Television Marketplace, which will take place from June 25 to 27 in Los Angeles.
The marketplace serves as a launchpad for sharing important and entertaining stories focused on the environment, and to connect filmmakers with distribution opportunities. The event is as a special program partnered with the 2024 Hollywood Climate Summit, which is known for its history of attracting television, film executives and creators who are passionate about the environment.
“This marketplace is filling a necessary gap in the industry. After five years of cultivating a community of thousands of storytellers committed to climate action, we know firsthand that there are so many incredible stories at the symbolic gates waiting to reach audiences,” said Heather Fipps, co-founder of the Hollywood Climate Summit and program director of the Redford Center. “The impact of these films reaching a broader audience could be culturally transformative.”
There will also be screenings of this year’s best climate stories in feature films, documentaries, fiction, unscripted series and short films and panels hosted by filmmakers and creatives. The screenings taking place will include “Bring Them Home,” “Standing Above the Clouds,” “Searching for Amani,” “Earthbound,” “Our Shark Story,” “American Southwest,” “Plastic People,” “Wild Hope,” “A Body Called Life,” “Circle of Life,” “Symphony of Tiny Lights” and “The Here Now Project.”
Braham Entertainment Wraps Principal Photography on ‘Angel City’
Production company Braham Entertainment has finished principal photography on Los Angeles drama “Angel City,” starring writer and director Noel Braham alongside Bria Samoné Henderson, SNL alum Chris Kattan, Dwight Hicks, Helen Kim, Kim Estes, Stakiah Lynn Washington and Tonya Pinkins.
The feature, shot in L.A., follows the journey of Ace, a rideshare driver who is set on pursuing his dream of becoming an actor. While he balances his online persona and living conditions, his dreams and reality blur while he verges on the edge of homelessness.
“Angel City” is an adaptation of Braham’s short film “Watchtower,” inspired by a production assistant who was living in an encampment while trying to become an actor. The film was produced by Courtney L. Branch and Mario Contini served as director of photography. Sherri Martin, Dale Martin, Hadassah McGrew, and Michael Knapp served as executive producers.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Announces Eighth Year of Gold Rising
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the 2024 Academy Gold Rising talent development program, which invites college seniors and recent graduates on an eight-week summer educational initiative to help jumpstart their careers in film. Gold Rising participants will attend networking events, receive exclusive internship opportunities and hear from panelists and speakers from the industry’s top filmmakers.
“The Academy’s Gold Rising program cultivates the next generation of storytellers and artisans,” said Brooke Breton, Academy governor and member of the Academy Foundation Board of Trustees. “We eagerly anticipate guiding this year’s class to demonstrate and instill a deep appreciation of how each discipline and aspect of filmmaking contributes to the collaborative nature of our industry.”
‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Producer World of Wonder Releases Trailer for Documentary ‘The Little Paegent That Could’
Producer of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” World of Wonder has released the trailer for its new documentary “The Little Pageant That Could,” which follows The Best in Drag Show at the Province Town Film Festival. The documentary features host and judge appearances by Chris Pratt, Jennifer Coolidge, John C. Reilly, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Martin Sheen, Charlie Sheen, Vanessa Williams, Anna Faris, singer Jennifer Holliday and designer Bob Mackie.
The Best in Drag Show is the longest-running drag benefit in Los Angeles. Since 1990, the event has grossed over $6 million to help those living with HIV/AIDS.
John Carlos Frey directs with Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato serving as executive producers.
