AEW's Ricky Starks says he never doubted he could match Chris Jericho on the microphone
AEW's Ricky Starks faces Chris Jericho at Revolution this Sunday (March 5) in what will be one of his biggest matches to date.
Starks is known as being one of AEW's best on the microphone but promoting with Jericho has given him a chance to really prove himself against one of the best ever in wrestling.
Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy ahead of Revolution, Starks says he never doubted he could go toe-to-toe with Jericho on the mic.
"It's a good little feather in my cap to know that I can stand shoulder to shoulder with Chris, to which there was never a doubt in my head," Starks said. "But to actually go out there and prove it on a platform, it's helped me out tremendously."
Starks added that he used to practice doing promos as a child, so where he is now feels pretty surreal.
"To be a younger fan, to look at myself now going back and forth with Jericho... Honestly the funniest thing is, even when I was like 12 or 11, I was cutting these promos in the mirror and talking trash to all types of, you know, Superstars. So it's just crazy to see it realised in such a fashion of, being in AEW."
Although they're feuding now, it wasn't too long ago that Starks was sitting next to Jericho at the commentary desk on Rampage.
Speaking about their time on commentary together, Starks said: "If anything, I think it showed him like, 'Hey, I'm not a young guy that's a pushover. I'm just as witty as they come so, you know, be prepared."
Starks was on commentary while he was recovering from a neck injury and says the experience left him with a number of new skills he was able to use when he got back to wrestling.
"There are things about commentary that I don't think a lot of people think about in terms of the challenges that you face," Starks said. "Having to think on your feet as quickly as you can to say certain things, to help enhance the wrestling match and do it in such a small limited space.
"I learned a lot in such a short period that I think I took it for granted at the time. Now, looking back on it, it was an amazing opportunity because I've used a lot of the tools that I found.
"Overall it was a great experience. I just wish at the time I would have saw it," he added. "Not that I didn't but I just wish I would have said, 'Okay I need to enjoy it because it's going to go away really soon.'"
