Ryan Murphy's true crime anthology series Monster has just confirmed details of the case which will feature in season 2.

The Netflix series will be taking on another murder case that rocked the US following the first, polarising chapter on Jeffrey Dahmer, with Evan Peters in the role of the serial killer.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story will chronicle the killing of José and Mary Louise 'Kitty' Menéndez at the hands of their sons.

The couple were fatally shot in their Beverly Hills home on August 20, 1989, with Lyle and Erik – who were 21 and 19 at the time of the murder – being convicted of first-degree murder in 1996.

The new chapter in the American Horror Story creator's anthology series was announced yesterday (May 1), with a clip of a 911 call in which Lyle tells the operator that his parents have been shot.

Though the brothers weren't initially considered suspects in the murders, they were investigated months later as investigations continued.

Erik would confess to his psychologist Jerome Oziel, according to the Los Angeles Times. Oziel in turn told his then-lover Judalon Smyth, with Smyth later becoming a defence witness at the first trial.

After the brothers' separate 1993 trials resulted in a mistrial since both juries were unable to reach a verdict, they were subsequently tried together by one jury and found guilty.

Lyle and Erik said they acted in self-defence after being subjected to abusive behaviour from their parents, particularly their father.

In July 1996, the brothers were then sentenced to life without parole following the trial, and are both incarcerated at the Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility.

The cast of Monsters hasn't been announced yet. Off the back of the success of Dahmer, Netflix ordered two more instalments of Monster in November last year.

The streaming service is also working on a documentary about the case.

Monster season 2 is expected to be released on Netflix in 2024. Season 1 is available on the same platform.
