Alcohol and music: drinks to go with your late summer anthems

Enter The Exit and you’re in for a cool night.

First-time visitors to the Makati bar will feel disoriented as they stand by the door entrance that literally looks like the fire exit.

“Where am I going again?” you ask yourself.

Escape

But it doesn’t matter because The Exit provides more than a dimly lit drinking place that serves wonderful cocktails.

The Exit is actually a great place to hang in with friends, giving you a feeling of escape, like entering a hidden world.

The old school rock music playing softly in the background helps while you catch up over bottles of Blue Moon poured in appropriate Blue Moon glasses.

Wonderful cocktails

Other than beer, The Exit is also known for its impressive cocktails, which are special and carefully prepared.

The De Rigeur is a sweet honey and grapefruit cocktail laced with bourbon.

Another favorite is the refreshing Old Sport made with gin and a mix of cucumber, lime, mint and sugar.

The music and alcohol playlist

So, because alcohol and music always mix, we thought of asking the experts at The Exit what they’d recommend to go with some of our favorite late summer tunes.

Here’s what they came up with:

1. “Pompeii” by Bastille

What the song’s about: Here’s something that’s probably popular among hipsters. The song, which begins by referring to the ancient city, turns personal in the chorus, which talks about how you can be an optimist even if your life is in ruin.

What to drink with it: The Exit’s The Vaporizer-Flaming Sambuca. It’s made with 1 oz. of Sambuca, an Italian liqueur, poured into a Collins glass which you shake and then light up. To drink: put out the fire, inhale the alcohol vapor, then take the shot. Sounds as strong as old Pompeii.

2. “Magic” by Coldplay

What it’s about: Probably the breakup song this summer. The lyrics are sad but even if things are no longer the way it used to be, the magic remains.

What to drink with it: Instead of longing, stay positive with Four Roads concocted with equal parts Baileys, Kahlua and absinth, which when taken pure can have a hallucinogenic effect. You could only hope for a little magic together with the shot. And perhaps a vision of the green fairy.

3. “Overdrive” by Eraserheads

What it’s about: A happy song that triggers wanderlust, with lyrics mentioning Baguio, Batangas, Bicol, Visayas and Mindanao.

What to drink with it: What else but everyone’s favorite: ice-cold San Mig Light served in a frosted glass.

4. “Don’t You (Forget about Me)” by Simple Minds

What it’s about: A song filled with so much yearning, featuring lyrics like “Will you recognize me” and “I’ll pull us back together at heart.”

What to drink with it: The Exit suggests a drink called Jasmine, made with 1 oz. gin, ¾ oz. lemon, half an ounce of Cointreau and a quarter of Campari. It’s a bitter drink to go with this bitter song.

5. “Let It Go” from the movie Frozen

What it’s about: So overplayed but people still can’t help but sing along when they hear it.

What to drink with it: You might think an ice-cold brew or a slushy Margarita but The Exit recommends the White Russian made with 1 oz. vodka with half an ounce each of Kahlua and cream. It’s a cocktail named after one of the coldest countries in the world and but tastes sweet enough for anyone who’s want to listen to “Let It Go.”
