Alex Munter stepping down as CHEO president
After more than a decade at the helm of eastern Ontario's children's hospital, Alex Munter is leaving CHEO to become the next CEO of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).
In a letter shared Thursday by the hospital's board of directors, Munter said it was with "mixed emotions" that he was stepping down after 13 years as CHEO's president and CEO.
"I will still work closely with pediatric physicians, CHEO and many other health-care organizations. And, of course, I am the parent of a six-year-old," Munter wrote.
"So like every other parent and caregiver in our region, I am deeply invested in CHEO's success. I will always have CHEO's back."
With more than 68,000 member physicians and trainees, the CMA is the largest advocacy group for medical doctors in Canada.
As its new CEO, Munter will bring extensive health sector experience as well as "bold and inclusive leadership," said CMA board chair Dr. Suzanne Strasberg in her own statement.
"His decades of experience in health-care advocacy and commitment to inclusivity and collaboration will bolster the momentum the CMA has built to improve health and health care," Strasberg said.
Munter will remain in his current role at CHEO until October 2024. The hospital said he was not available for interviews Thursday.
