AliveCor's ECG now on Android

Starting Friday, October 4, AliveCor's clinical-quality electrocardiogram (ECG) is compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S III, S4, and the HTC One as well as iOS devices.

Apple devices supported are the iPhone 4, 4S, and 5 and -- as of October 4 -- the iPod Touch 5. However, as of now, the Android version is cleared only for US customers, while those in the UK can access the iOS version, but expansions to other countries seem very likely. The device has also received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.

The AliveCor Heart Monitor ($199) provides an easy way to keep track of your ticker. Attach the device to your phone, then download an app via Google Play or the Apple Store. Take a reading of your heart by either placing your phone on your chest or placing your fingers on the case's electrodes for 10 seconds. Data can be immediately uploaded to the cloud, or available to print or email right from your phone.

Soon you'll also be sharing your heart's beat on Instagram via BioGram, an app that pairs with AliveCor's technology to place an image of your BPM reading next to your photos. Announced at the University of Southern California's Body Computing Conference, the app should be ready by next year, its developers say.
