SINGAPORE — In a field of mostly seasoned professional golfers, Singapore's Shannon Tan - still an amateur - claimed the biggest win of her career by clinching the inaugural Singapore Ladies Masters on Saturday (8 July).

The 19-year-old shot a superb six-under-par 66 in the final round of the US$100,000 (S$135,000) China Ladies Professional Golf Tour tournament at the Laguna National Golf Resort Club to finish at 10-under 206 for the 54-hole competition.

Second-placed Chinese golfer Ji Yuai finished a stroke behind Tan, missing her birdie attempt on the final hole to settle for a 67 and 207 total. Thailand’s Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong carded a 70 to finish third with a 210 total.

With her win, Tan also becomes the first Singaporean golfer to win an international golf tournament since Mardan Mamat won the Singapore Masters in 2006, also at Laguna National.

“This win is truly special, especially in front of all my friends and family who have been supporting me all week," said the Texas Tech University student, who had flown in to compete at the Ladies Masters.

“I didn’t know I had to make the birdie putt on the 18th to win, and I just approached it like any other normal putt."

The Singapore Ladies Masters featured an international field of 132 golfers from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, United States, Indonesia, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

It was the fifth leg of the 2023 Chinese Ladies Professional Golf Association season after stops in Tianjin, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong.
