Amon-Ra St. Brown's Brothers: All About Equanimeous, Osiris and Their Football Family

Amon-Ra St. Brown and his siblings, Equanimeous and Osiris, pursued their athletic dreams together

Detroit Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and his brothers — Equanimeous and Osiris — played everything from baseball to basketball to soccer before committing to football.

Former Notre Dame standout Equanimeous is now a New Orleans Saints wide receiver. Osiris, the middle child, won a football scholarship to Stanford University but had his career cut short by injuries.

Amon-Ra, the youngest, committed to the NFL draft early after three successful years as a wide receiver for the University of Southern California. He is now a two-time Pro-Bowler and signed a contract extension in April 2024, making him one of the highest-paid wide receivers in the league.

“People always ask, ‘Who the best is out of all of them?’ I go, ‘It depends on the situation,’” their father, John Brown, told Sports Illustrated in 2017. “Equanimeous is like good soul music. Osiris is like good jazz, smooth jazz. Amon-Ra is good rap.”

But for all the accolades and attention the brothers have garnered over the years, John and his wife Miriam Brown, are more impressed with their bond off the field.

“Out of everything they've accomplished, the thing I'm most proud of is they're gentlemen, and they're tight,” John told WDIV in 2024.

Amon-Ra and his siblings' names have special meanings

The St. Browns all have unique monikers, and according to their father, this was by design.

“My name was very mundane,” John explained to Yahoo Sports in 2022. “I didn’t want that for them.”

He chose the “powerful” name Equanimeous for his firstborn after reading it in his friend’s book. Although his choice raised questions, he remained confident. "I told [people] it sounded good. I told them no one would ever forget it," John told Bleacher Report in 2018.

When John had two more sons, he looked to Egyptian mythology for guidance: Amun-Ra is the Egyptian deity of the sun, while Osiris is the deity of the underworld.

“It's a strong name. It translates to energy, and it fits him to the T. It just sounds strong coming off your tongue -- Amon-Ra … Ra!!!" John explained to NFL.com in 2021, noting the slightly different spelling. "Oh, man, he's a guy who can change the culture of a team.”

John also thought that St. Brown was more interesting and would look better on the back of his boys' jerseys, according to his conversation with Sports Illustrated.

Amon-Ra and his brothers began training together as kids

Amon-Ra's father, John, saw potential in him and his siblings when they were children, and he started training them in the proper form and technique of weightlifting. According to Yahoo Sports, Equanimeous was 8 years old at the time, while Osiris was 6 and Amon-Ra was 5.

The family patriarch — who won Mr. World three times and Mr. Universe twice — used PVC pipe because of its weightlessness and kept a close eye on them during their sessions. Although all three boys aspired to play in the NFL, John persuaded them at an early age that physical preparation, rather than playing, was the key to athletic excellence.

“Other people thought I was crazy,” John revealed in an interview with Yahoo Sports in 2022. “Some guy in the 1920s said that lifting weights early stunts your growth and everyone believed him. It’s probably the same guy who said the world was flat.”

Once the brothers mastered the correct techniques, they were allowed to use equipment under supervision. While John’s methods seemed unorthodox to some, his sons acknowledged it gave them a competitive advantage.

“Lifting with my dad at a young age, you felt like you were stronger than every kid on the field. You mentally felt like you had an advantage over all the other kids,” Amon-Ra told NFL.com in 2021. “If you know you're stronger than the guy you're competing against, it breeds confidence.”

They are multilingual

Miriam moved to the U.S. from her native Leverkusen, Germany, after meeting her husband at a fitness trade show in Cologne in 1987, per Sports Illustrated.

She was determined to have Amon-Ra and his brothers speak German as well as English, so she talked to them only in German, both in person and through text. The mom of three also allowed them certain leisure activities after they practiced their vocabulary.

“It was never a question to me when I came here that my children should speak different languages,” Miriam told Rivals in 2015.

She later added French to the mix and enrolled them in Lycee International de Los Angeles, a French academy, for elementary school. The St. Brown brothers also spent a semester in Paris, where they went to school with the locals.

“I didn't really care,” Amon-Ra said to Rivals about the immersion program. “I didn't have many friends at the time so I just went along with it.”

Amon-Ra and Equanimeous host a podcast

Amon-Ra and Equanimeous have taken their love of football to the airwaves: The duo host the appropriately titled St. Brown Brothers Podcast, where they give listeners an inside look at their respective teams, dissect games, explore current events in the league and even participate in friendly debates about video games.

Former and current NFL stars regularly make appearances on the show, including Calvin "Megatron" Johnson Jr., Justin Fields and Chris Johnson.

The brothers’ sibling rivalry is often on display on the audio show. After a December 2023 game between his former team, the Chicago Bears, and the Lions, Equanimeous admitted he was saving his trash talk for their show.

“I thought we were going to win, so I was looking forward to the podcast during most of the game," he joked in an interview.

As for Amon-Ra, he told Sports Illustrated that he enjoys poking fun at his older sibling. "I love to give him s--- on my podcast because I can; he's my brother," he said.

Amon-Ra and Equanimeous have friendly competition

In 2023, Amon-Ra told Sports Illustrated about the benefits of playing in the NFL with his brother.

“It's fun, it's a lot of fun just with family being around, getting to play him, kind of know some of the players on the team through him,” he said. “I get to talk to him before the game, after the game.”

The pair also like to keep things interesting and add a layer of extra motivation. Although the brothers didn't actually wager money on individual games, they promised $1,000 to whoever’s team finished the season with the most victories.

The brothers are supportive of each other

When Osiris was ready to select a college, he vacillated between committing to Stanford University and Notre Dame, the latter where his older brother was enrolled. With his family’s support, he chose to step out of Equanimeous’ shadow and blaze his own trail.

“It was really tough, one of the toughest decisions I've had to make,” Osiris said in an interview with Bleacher Report in 2016. “Both schools are so great academically, so it was hard to choose. It just came down to how I felt, what I wanted to study and which school had the better program to me.”

He added, “My brother understands I wanted to make my own decision. He respected that. He told me to go to the school that best fit me. I guess you could say I'm creating my own path.”

Osiris was the first sibling to graduate from college

After enrolling at Stanford University in 2017, Osiris joined the team's football team and was a wide receiver for three seasons, according to his profile. During his senior year, he only played one game while recovering from an injury.

He documented games and behind-the-scene moments on Instagram, including playing against his brother Amon-Ra and the USC Trojans in 2018.

Osiris graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor of science degree in 2021 and marked the special moment with a lighthearted message to his siblings, both of whom left school early to enter the NFL.

"Goodbye Stanford 👋🏼 I can forever say that I’m the first in my family to graduate college @equanimeous @amonra_stbrown 🥳," he wrote on Instagram.

Although Osiris doesn't play professional football, he still cheers on Amon-Ra and Equanimeous, whom he posts about on his social media from time to time. As for his post-college career, Osiris appears to be exploring an entrepreneurial path, according to his LinkedIn.
