UAE golf round-up: BBGS are the top golfing society

Bankers and Brokers Golf Society (BBGS) emerged triumphant in the 11th Inter-Society Championship at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club recently.

Apart from the defending champions Lebanese Golf Society, this year’s field consisted of teams from the JIGGERS, BBGS, Indian Golf Society, Dubai Divots, Dogfight Society and the FOGS.

Each society was invited to enter a team of eight players to compete in the Pairs Betterball Stableford format with the top three pairs’ scores making up the overall team score.

The BBGS team of Stephen Rutter, Matthew Baxter, Richard Mylrea, Andrew Crockford, Andrew Baxter, Neil Haywood, Yvette Haywood and Neil Orchard cruised to victory with a score of 116 points.

The Indian Golf Society and the Dubai Divots Society finished tied on 113 points for second place. This meant that second place had to be decided on the fourth score from each team. In the end, the Indian Golf Society narrowly claimed runner-up position as their fourth team score of 33 edged out the 31 points of Dubai Divots.

Stephen Rutter of the BBGS said: “This is the first victory for the BBGS in the Inter-Society Championship. We are delighted to have come out on top today over so many other great golf societies. We look forward to coming back next year and defending our title.”

There was a two-way tie for the ‘Best Pair’ prize as Andrew Baxter and Neil Heywood of BBGS finished on 42 points along with Brett Kraetzer and Ryan Taylor of the Dubai Divots. After applying a count-back, it was Kraetzer and Taylor who were adjudged winners with 21 points on their inward half to the 20 of Baxter and Heywood.

Bryce Allen of JIGGERS picked up the Nearest to the Pin prize on the par-3 fifth hole. Dubai Creek member and Dogfight’s David Gowans took the same prize for his shot into the par-3 eighth hole. Another JIGGERS member, Kelvin Taylfield, took the last Nearest to the Pin prize on the 14th whilst Andy Baxter picked up his second prize of the day for the straightest drive on the 17th.

At the prize giving ceremony, Dubai Creek’s Head Golf Professional Stephen Hubnersaid: “It is always a real pleasure for us to host society groups and we look forward to continue to look after the needs of your members as we move forward. This event always has a special feel and it is enjoyable to watch the various societies mixing and meeting new friends.”

IN BRIEF

Patel seals Tournament of Champions title
The 2012-2013 season has concluded with the staging of the Tournament of Champions and the Mashreq Medal Championship at Emirates Golf Club.

Ewan Cameron compiled an excellent round over the Majlis course, carding a gross 71, net 70, to clinch the best gross of the day and victory in Division A (handicap 0-10).

On two-under par was Jignesh Sangani, narrowly missing out on the top prize after a card count back. Nishith Patel and Ed Hesson produced low rounds of the day in Division B. Both carded rounds of 69, but it was Patel who took the honours due to a superior back nine. Jan Hooftman carded a net 70 to clinch Division C.

The Tournament of Champions was open to members who had won a medal or club event during the season. Patel triumphed with his net 69, with Hesson runner-up and Sangani in third. Cameron topped the gross section with a 71.

Hood wins Open Stableford in Al Hamra play-off
John Hood had to endure a card play-off to decide his eventual win in the last Open Stableford of the season at Al Hamra Golf Club.

Both Hood and Fred Watts carded scores of 37 points in tough windy conditions which meant a countback was required in order to separate the two.

Both players were tied after nine holes, and Hood eventually won it on the last six holes scoring 11 points leaving Watts to pick up the runner-up prize.

Third place also came down to a card play-off as both Ma Li Min and Bill Grosser carded level-par scores of 36. Li Min’s awesome back nine of 21 points, which included a net eagle on the 13th hole, against Grosser’s 19 points, gave her the last podium place.
