Amtrak suspended between Pennsylvania and Connecticut

Amtrak service was suspended between New Haven, Conn., and Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon, the railroad corporation said. Power has since been restored but delays will occur.

In a series of posts on social platform X, Amtrak Northeast said there was an overhead power outage reported between New York and Newark and customers “may experience significant delays” as crews work to resolve the issue.

As the Northeast experiences high temperatures, Amtrak said trains operating from noon to 7:30 p.m. will be moving at lower speeds for the rest of the week, which will result in delays.

Just before 3 p.m. EDT, rail traffic between New Haven and Philadelphia was suspended as crews attempted to restore power in the New York area.

“Significant delays are anticipated,” Amtrak said at 2:54 p.m.

In a release, the company said a malfunctioning circuit breaker is the reported cause of the widespread power issue, which resulted in a loss of power on the tracks.

“Personnel are troubleshooting the issue and hope to have a resolution soon,” Amtrak said.

In an update at 4:18 p.m., Amtrak said service is still suspended and an “unrelated brush fire has also been reported” east of Newark Union Station. The local fire department is on the scene and working to extinguish the fire.

“Customers with reservations on affected trains will typically be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or another day,” Amtrak said. “Amtrak will waive additional charges for customers looking to change their reservation during the modified schedule by calling our reservation center.”
