Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes are recalling a scary moment from their Memorial Day weekend getaway.

The couple revealed they were heading up to Connecticut for a romantic vacation when they encountered an unexpected storm, they shared on a May 29 episode of their podcast Amy and T.J. Robach, 51, was driving up from their home base in New York City, while Holmes, 46, decided to make the journey on his motorcycle.

“I have a motorcycle that I ride around the city here,” he explains. “I love it. We were going to a lake this weekend in Connecticut and I was so excited to put the bike on the road. This is my first actual road trip. Beautiful ride out of the city, out of Manhattan.”

Robach says they were passing Yankee Stadium when things took a turn for the worse and the skies just “opened up.”

“I honestly was looking back at you as much as I was looking forward. I felt like I never took my eyes off you and the road at the same time because I was worried about both, for anyone even driving in these conditions. I could barely see. It was a flash flood.”

Holmes adds that his only choice was to keep going at “40 plus miles an hour” because stopping under an overpass would have been “even more dangerous” due to the lightning.

“Trucks were passing by,” he recalls. “I was getting completely drenched.”

Robach continues to describe the terrifying scene. “It was crazy. I was looking back and thinking, 'Oh my god.' Like, when a semi truck would come by you and push basically an entire tsunami of water on top of you, I thought it might knock you over — just the sheer force of the water cascading over you. And I didn't know what to do.”

She emphasizes that it got so dark her car “thought it was nighttime” and there was ”lightning and thunder and rain so hard” that she had to slow down to 25 miles per hour.

Holmes admits it was definitely “an adventure” and that riding his motorcycle that distance may have been a “stupid thing to do.”

“I've only been riding a motorcycle full time for, I mean, this summer will make a year. So I don't do a lot of road trips and I don't have a lot of experience with this kind of weather,” he explains.
