Amy Robach’s decision to date T.J. Holmes was driven largely by her cancer journey.

During the most recent episode of Amy & T.J., which was filmed live in New York City on June 10, Robach discussed her motivation for dating Holmes.

When the pair first started their relationship, they were still employed as hosts for GMA3: What You Need to Know and secretly separated from their spouses; Robach, 51, was married to ex Andrew Shue, while Holmes, 46, was married to ex Marilee Fiebig.

“[My] cancer journey played a huge role in my decision,” she said during the episode, adding, “I asked myself, if your cancer came back and you knew you had one year to live, how would you spend it? And it wasn't even close. I would spend it with T.J.”

“I have preached, and I've given speeches to breast cancer survivors … and anyone who's gone through anything life-threatening or had anything where you thought you might die, whatever it is. You learn that tomorrow is not guaranteed,” she added.

In a January episode of Amy & T.J., Robach also spoke about her cancer journey, recalling how she "thought she was going to die" when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2013 and still relives that fear "every six months" when she gets check-ups.

“When people say, ‘Oh, what are the chances?’ You can say, ‘Actually, if it’s less than 1%, if it happens to you, it’s everything. It’s 100%,' " she emphasized. "And living then your life, knowing that your greatest fear could actually happen, is crippling in moments."

During a December 2023 episode of Amy & T.J., Holmes recalled that “something else was evolving” between him and Robach during the summer of 2022.

“We kind of tiptoed around it, and I didn't want to say anything. You didn't want to say anything, but then as we proceeded through last summer, things definitely changed and we started having conversations,” he said in the episode.

Robach explained that they were “spending so much time together at work,” adding that the pair “didn't want it to end.” She also revealed that she and Holmes would look forward to their working weeks together rather than their weekends off.

“I remember us both saying, ‘Oh, Fridays are a bummer.' Normally people are excited about Fridays, right? Didn't want it to be Friday, and I was excited about Monday [and returning to work],” she recalled.

Robach and Holmes’ relationship became public in November 2022. Holmes and Fiebig settled their divorce a few weeks later, while Robach later finalized her divorce from Shue in March, according to Page Six. Although the couple’s off-camera relationship did not violate policy, ABC News said their relationship had become an “internal and external disruption.” They were let go from GMA3 in January 2023.

While Holmes said at the live event on June 10 the pair were “angry as hell” at ABC News for “quite some time” after their exit, they’ve since moved on, becoming more public about their relationship. In December 2023, they proudly made their red carpet debut as a couple at iHeartRadio's Jingle Ball 2023.

In the months since, Robach and Holmes have discussed their future together, with Robach musing during one episode in February she’d love to elope to Fiji for her third wedding. The pair also discussed engagement rings in an April episode, and while they were uncertain about eventually tying the knot, Robach made it clear she wants to spend the rest of her live with Holmes.
