Amy Winehouse biopic ‘Back to Black’ drops full-length trailer
The full length trailer for “Back to Black,” the long-awaited Amy Winehouse biopic, has officially dropped.
Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, the trailer opens with a voice-over from “Industry” star Marisa Abela, who portrays the late British singer.
“I want people to hear my voice and just forget their troubles for five minutes,” she says in the style of Winehouse’s husky London accent.
The film, hitting theaters May 17, takes audiences through “the life behind the lyrics” of Winehouse, from adolescence to adulthood, culminating in the creation of her second and final studio album, 2006’s “Back to Black.”
“Do you know what girl power means to me? Sarah Vaughan, Lauryn Hill. You need to know this, I ain’t no Spice Girl,” says Abela’s Winehouse.
The trailer also shows a montage of Winehouse’s tumultuous relationships and their impact both in and out of the studio, as well as her desire to have children. “Witness the love story that inspired one of the greatest albums of all time,” the trailer teases.
Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil is portrayed by Jack O’Connell, while dad Mitch and her influential grandmother Cynthia are played by Eddie Marsan and Lesley Manville, respectively.
Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011. At just 27 years old, her sudden death initiated her into the so-called “27 Club” of fellow musicians who died at the premature age. Though her career was short-lived, Winehouse earned six Grammys.
The film comes over a decade after Mitch Winehouse, 73, ruled out a big-screen adaptation of his daughter’s tragic story.
“It would hardly be a biopic without the music and we’d never allow the songs to be released,” he told the Daily Mail in 2011. However, Winehouse’s music, which is owned by Universal Music Group, will feature in the film.
Amy Winehouse’s legacy has also been chronicled in 2015’s “Amy,” which won the Oscar for best documentary feature film.
