Another man arrested for attempted breach at Woodlands Checkpoint

Woodlands Checkpoint.

In what is the second case this month and the fourth this year, yet another man was arrested for trying to pass through the Woodlands Checkpoint without clearing immigration.

The 33-year-old driver, a Malaysian, was unable to produce his passport at the Arrival car counter when he pulled up at about 10:45am on Monday, said the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) in a statement.

When he was directed to a separate area for further checks, he instead tried to drive out of the checkpoint and into Singapore, a move that triggered the alarm and an immediate lock down of the arrival zone. He was then arrested on the spot, the statement added.

The ICA is investigating the case, one that comes barely a week after 42-year-old Koh Chin Had was arrested for trying to tailgate his way out of the Woodlands Checkpoint. He, too, had no travel documents on him.

In early March this year, a Singapore-registered gold Mercedes Benz ran over a raised security barrier at the checkpoint while undergoing secondary checks, injuring an auxiliary police officer who tried to stop him from leaving. The 64-year-old Singapore permanent resident is currently remanded in the Institute of Mental Health.

Meanwhile in January, a 27-year-old Malaysian woman tailgated her way through the checkpoint, followed a taxi into and out of the Cantonment Police Complex and finally tailgated her way into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs compound over a three-day lapse that brought significant embarrassment to Singapore’s police force and drew strong criticism from Home Affairs Minister Teo Chee Hean. The charges against her were dropped after she was found to be of unsound mind when she committed the offences.
