Periods of heavy snowfall and strong winds are in the forecast for Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula on Sunday, coming on the heels of a storm that closed many schools and businesses for two days.

Environment Canada is forecasting between 15 and 25 centimetres of snow, falling at a rate of three to five centimetres an hour at times on Sunday morning. Wind gusts near 80 km/h are expected, reaching 100km/h over parts of the southeastern Avalon.

The snow is expected to spread northward across the Avalon Peninsula on Saturday night, with winds ramping up on Sunday morning, which could blow around the freshly fallen snow and cause poor visibility.

By Sunday afternoon, the snow is expected to taper off to flurries.

The southern corner of the Avalon Peninsula could see a brief period of mixed precipitation Sunday morning.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for the area because of the rapidly accumulating snow and poor visibility at times in heavy and blowing snow.

It's another stormy day after heavy snowfall on Wednesday buried most of the island and continued into Thursday, closing schools, government buildings and businesses.

A winter storm warning is also in effect for Postville and Makkovik, where snow and blizzard conditions are expected to continue Saturday after heavy snowfall in recent days.
