New ANPR cameras planned for school streets
New cameras could be installed to make sure drivers obey traffic restrictions around school roads in Coventry.
The ANPR enforcement cameras, set to be installed near four schools, would monitor streets drivers are not permitted to use at drop-off and pick-up times on weekdays.
The scheme has been trialled on Knights Templars Way since February 2023, with drivers caught breaking the rules fined £50 by police.
If cameras are installed, drivers caught breaching restrictions could be fined £70, with residents and other vehicles exempt from the ban.
The schools where traffic restrictions are set to be brought in are Stanton Bridge Primary School, Southfields Primary School, Ravensdale Primary School and Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School.
If the new scheme is approved, camera-based monitoring of the school roads would start in September, a Coventry City Council report said.
Evidence from residents and officers, backed up by traffic data from last month, shows many drivers are not following the restrictions despite clear signs, the report added.
A decision on the scheme is set to be made on 17 June.
The council will also decide whether the scheme at Knights Templar Way should be made permanent, and if this should also get cameras in September.
