Ant and Dec have announced that a Byker Grove reboot is on the way, 17 years after the original show ended.

The comeback, just titled Byker, will be produced by the original stars who found fame as PJ and Duncan on the Newcastle-based children's series.

The original BBC series, which ran from 1989 to 2006, followed a group of young people who all attended the same youth club in the North East.

As they opened up about the exciting news on the Instagram of Fulwell 73, the show's production company, Dec reassured fans: "Don't worry we're not making another album."

He added: "17 years after it closed its doors for the final time, Byker Grove is opening them up again."

Ant shared that the duo are working "on a reboot on the '90s classic, bringing it back for a whole new audience as well as those of us who are old enough to remember it so fondly".

Dec continued: "Byker Grove will always be very special to us as the show which gave us our break, so we are beyond excited."

The TV presenter teased that while the storyline is in early development, the show "will navigate the challenges of the 2020s" and a PJ and Duncan cameo could be on the cards.

The Saturday Night Takeaway stars also expressed their delight that the reboot would provide work and sustainable training for people in the North East both in front of and behind the camera.

Meanwhile, the production company explained that the new series will be aimed at an older "primetime audience" and "engage with a new generation of teenagers navigating the different challenges faced by young adults today".

It has not been confirmed whether any of the original cast members will return with this reboot, as the show also launched the careers of Chelsea Halfpenny, Laura Norton, Donna Air, Jill Halfpenny and Andrew Hayden-Smith.

There is no confirmed release date for the comeback yet, but it will also air on the BBC.
