Love Island contestant Antigoni Buxton has urged internet trolls to rethink their reaction to fellow islander Tasha Ghouri, who she says is "a really sweet girl".

Ghouri was coupled up with Andrew Le Page by the public on day one of Love Island and remained in a relationship with him until this week's Casa Amor twist, when both she and Le Page both chose another person.

She has been central to a lot of negativity on social media throughout the show, with viewers criticising her for showing willingness to consider other boys as they enter the villa.

But Buxton, who was dumped from the villa earlier this month, told Digital Spy that Ghouri doesn't deserve the response she has received.

"I think [Tasha] is a really sweet girl. She's really lovely and it's not her fault that every guy has come in and wanted to get to know her. And I think it's only fair to give people a chance," said Buxton.

The 26-year-old added: "She has not done anything reckless. It's not like she's been dishonest about it or anything. So I feel like it's a bit unfair."

She said that the abuse was far from justified and that it would make difficult reading for Ghouri when she ultimately leaves the show.

Buxton added: "I really hope the tide turns against her in the kind of social media world because I think it'd be really hard for her to come out to what's been said now, because she's actually a really lovely girl."

Ghouri returned from Casa Amor this week in a couple with Billy Brown, while Le Page chose to couple with Coco Lodge.

Despite their decisions to recouple, Ghouri and Le Page initially seemed likely to rekindle their romance until the final minutes of Friday's episode, in which revelations about a sex act Le Page had performed with Lodge caused a huge argument.

Ghouri's appearance on Love Island has made history as she is the first deaf contestant to take part in the dating show, wearing a cochlear implant on camera.

Speaking before the series began, Ghouri said: "I think [friends would] say I’m inspirational because of my hearing and my cochlear implant. I inspire quite a lot of people because I’m really open about it."
