Apep's Resort in Genshin Impact: Is this where the second Sumeru weekly boss will be?

The map in Genshin Impact may seem huge now, but there are many locations throughout the four nations released so far that developer HoYoverse has hinted at but are yet to be accessible to us players.

We’ve previously talked about Dornman Port, its mentions in-game, and our speculations regarding its location, but the oft-mentioned Apep’s Resort, located in Sumeru, has its entrance quite visible to players.

However, the lore behind this location is shrouded in much mystery.

With the main story for Sumeru soon coming to a close and Fontaine looming on the horizon, will Apep's Resort be part of the last map update to Sumeru before we move on to a new region?

What is up with Apep's Resort?

Apep's Resort is located in the northernmost part of the Desert of Hadramaveth. You can reach it by going to the northernmost Teleport Waypoint and heading to the cavern in the northeast.

According to the description of the viewpoint you can unlock in the area, Apep's Resort is a “court in a great cavern beneath the dunes” that was built by a friend of King Deshret, aptly named Apep, where Wenut and winged serpents served as its officials.

The description also notes that both the Wenut and the winged serpents "have lost their noble wit and vigor".

You can encounter the Wenut striking from below in certain parts of the Desert of Hadramaveth. The winged serpents also inhabit multiple areas of the desert, with some even mutating into Consecrated Flying Serpents after consuming the remains of greater lifeforms, such as gods.

The greatest of the remaining Wenut, the Setekh Wenut, can also be fought as a normal boss in a huge cavern beneath the Desert of Hadramaveth.

Liloupar, during the Dirge of Bilqis questline, also comments “(Ah) the children of Apep, reduced to this..." when Jeht explains to us what a Wenut is.

Since Apep's Resort was said to have inhabited by Wenut and flying serpents, we can assume that he is either the progenitor of these creatures or a being that holds dominion over them.

Apep being described as a friend of King Deshret may also point towards it being a god, or at least a being of godlike power.

The name Apep itself lends credence to such speculations, as it originates from Egyptian mythology as the name of the serpent god of chaos, and is known as the greatest enemy of Ra, the Egyptian god of the sun.

But why is the place called Apep's Resort? It certainly does not look like a good place for a vacation, seeing as it's located underneath scorching sands with ruins scattered about and where monsters roam.

Perhaps the usage of the word 'Resort' here does not refer to a place for recreation, but rather the act of turning to a particular strategy or course of action during a difficult situation, as in the phrase 'the last resort'.

The description for Apep's Resort said the Wenut and winged serpents 'served as officials' in the court of Apep, denoting some form of sentience. However, they have now lost their 'noble wit and vigor' and are little more than just ordinary beasts of the desert.

Perhaps some sort of disaster happened there that turned the Wenut and flying serpents from noble and sentient beings into what they are now. Perhaps that disaster forced Apep to 'resort' to something in an attempt to stop it, which seems to have failed judging by the ruins you can find nearby.

We know of one disaster that happened in the deserts of Sumeru was the fall of King Deshret's kingdom after he unleashed forbidden knowledge into the world.

Perhaps it was that disaster that reached Apep's court, forcing him into making a 'final resort' that resulted in the area we see today?

Of course, we can only speculate until HoYoverse adds the area into the game. And maybe that time will be coming soon.

Judging from the content released in all previous regions, each region will be inhabited by two weekly bosses. Mondstadt has Stormterror and Andrius, Liyue has Childe and Azhdaha, while Inazuma has La Signora and Magatsu Mitake Narukami no Mikoto.

Sumeru has just one weekly boss in Shouki no Kami thus far, so it should be about time for a second one to be added before we head over to Fontaine.

Perhaps Apep will be that new weekly boss and the Traveler will be forced to fight it while trying to uncover the secret of Apep's Resort? We're very likely to know soon.
