Apple TV+ introduces InSight, a new feature similar to Amazon’s X-Ray, at WWDC 2024

At Apple’s WWDC 2024, the company revealed a handy new feature for Apple TV+ called InSight. The feature will allow viewers to learn actor names and song titles as they appear on the screen.

Apple TV+’s new feature appears to be similar to Amazon’s X-Ray feature, where users get an overview of actor bios and behind-the-scenes information while watching TV shows and movies. What stands out about InSight, however, is its Shazam-like functionality, which highlights the song playing in the TV show or movie and gives users the option to add it to an Apple Music playlist to listen to later.

To use “InSight,” Apple TV+ subscribers can use their remote to bring up a display with actor names and character information in real time. They can pull up a background and filmography page for a specific actor. There will also be a direct link to access the soundtrack on Apple Music.

Apple also announced several updates to tvOS, the software running on Apple TV. This includes improving the audio experience by bringing enhanced dialogue to TV speakers, receivers, AirPods, and other Bluetooth devices. Enhance Dialogue was previously only available to users with HomePod speakers.

Thanks to machine learning and computational audio, Enhance Dialogue is also getting smarter with tvOS 18. According to the company, there will be better vocal clarity over background noise, music, and action scenes on Apple TV 4K.

Another tvOS 18 feature coming to Apple TV is it’ll automatically enable subtitles for certain situations, like when the volume is muted, the language in the show or movie doesn’t match the device language, or when a user wants to replay a scene.

tvOS 18 will be available later this year.

Also during the event, Apple unveiled a revamp to the Photos app in iOS 18, as well as VisionOS 2 for the Vision Pro and a Calculator app, with all new bells and whistles, for iPad.
