‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ Leads Top 10 Most-Anticipated Movies of December | Chart
DC superhero sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is set to make waves this December, as audiences eagerly await Jason Momoa’s return to play the titular character of Aquaman.
The film took the top spot on Whip Media’s Movie Anticipation Report for the month, based on viewing intent data from TV Time, Whip Media’s TV and movie tracking app, with more than 28 million global registered users.
Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman join Momoa in the film, which is a follow-up to “Aquaman” (2018). The film retains director James Wan, who also worked on the previous film, and is best known for his work in the horror genre, including the “Saw,” “Insidious” and “The Conjuring” movie franchises. As the final installment in the DC Extended Universe, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” will expand on the worldbuilding from the original movie.
The second most anticipated movie release in December is “Wonka,” a musical fantasy film that tells the origin story of Willy Wonka. Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp previously played the iconic character, originally from Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” The new film features a large ensemble cast, with actor Timothée Chalamet starring in the titular role of the chocolate maker.
Upcoming space opera film “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” takes the No. 3 spot this December. It will have a limited theatrical release before making its streaming debut on Netflix. Directed by Zack Snyder, the film already has a sequel, which will debut in April. Snyder has high hopes for the franchise, as he’s expressed his desires for “Rebel Moon” to become a “massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”
Fourth place goes to “Leave the World Behind,” a psychological thriller based on author Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name about a family vacation that goes awry when two strangers show up with unsettling news. Netflix is also distributing this film, having won a bidding war for the rights to adapt the novel back in 2020. It will also hit the streamer this month after having a limited theatrical release in November.
Dark comedy fantasy movie “Poor Things” takes fifth place. The Searchlight Pictures film stars Emma Stone in the role of Bella Baxter, a young Victorian-era woman brought back to life by a scientist and eager to learn about the world around her. Development on the film started as far back as 2009, when director Yorgos Lanthimos acquired the rights to adapt the 1992 novel the movie is based on.
Action comedy “The Family Plan” takes No. 6 this month. The film will have an exclusive streaming debut on Apple TV+. Produced in collaboration with Skydance Media, it stars Mark Wahlberg as Dan Morgan, a family man who was once the deadliest assassin in the world.
Seventh Place goes to “Anyone but You,” a romantic comedy starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, who play a couple on vacation in Sydney, Australia.
Biographical sports drama film “The Iron Claw” places eighth this month. The film stars Zack Efron as Kevin Von Erich, a professional wrestler from a family of professional wrestlers who experience several personal tragedies.
The only holiday-themed movie on the ranker this December is “Candy Cane Lane,” a Christmas comedy that debuted exclusively on Prime Video on Dec. 1. The streaming holiday movie stars Eddie Murphy and revolves around a neighborhood Christmas decoration contest targeted by evil elves.
Wrapping up the December rankings at No. 10 is “Ferrari,” another biographical sports drama film. It takes place in 1957 and centers on Enzo Ferrari, played by Adam Driver, Italian racing driver and founder of the Ferrari automobile company.
