Much to football fans’ disappointment, Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi was in Singapore for a mere five hours on Saturday.
Argentina national coach Jorges Sampaoli defended the decision to release Messi, saying that he needed to rest after a long season, and that playing for Argentina in the friendly against Singapore was “risky”.
A statement from the organisers of the match said Messi, Gonzalo Higuaín and Nicolas Otamendi would miss the friendly “due to personal reasons”.
While it was widely reported that Messi skipped the Singapore leg of Argentina’s tour to focus on wedding preparations for his nuptials at the end of the month, Messi clearly had other ideas.
The 29-year-old posted a holiday snap with fiancee Antonella Roccuzzo on holiday in Ibiza. The couple and their children are holidaying together with teammate Luis Suarez and Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas, and their families.
Messi and Roccuzzo will wed on 30 June in Argentina.
