Arsenal vs Crystal Palace - LIVE!

Arsenal returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion with a 5-0 drubbing of Crystal Palace to climb one place to third in the Premier League. Gabriel's headed goal from a corner and a Dean Henderson own goal - also largely the work of Gabriel - put Mikel Arteta's side in control in the first half, and with Palace looking lacklustre, Leandro Trossard increased the lead just short of the hour as he finished off a sweeping move.

Substitute Gabriel Martinelli confirmed Arsenal's superiority and added some gloss to the scoreline with two almost identical finishes in stoppage time. Palace, who are 14th, had a few chances of their own and almost equalised when Jefferson Lerma's swerving shot was well-saved by David Raya shortly before Arsenal made it 2-0.

Such was Arsenal's comfort that Arteta was able to make four substitutions late on with Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Trossard and Gabriel all being given a breather. Arsenal's victory ended a run of three successive defeats in all competitions and put them level on points with Aston Villa and champions Manchester City.

After three defeats on the spin, this was just what the doctor ordered as Arsenal got back on track with a thumping win over Crystal Palace.

Mikel Arteta had admitted the Gunners could not afford to slip up again if they want to stay in the title race.

With that in mind, this clash against Crystal Palace was all about Arsenal getting three points - and in the end, they did so in style.

The win moves them up to third in the Premier League and two points off leaders Liverpool, who travel to Bournemouth on Sunday.

This was Arsenal’s first game since January 7, when they were dumped out of the FA Cup by Liverpool, and it will have lifted some of the doom and gloom around Emirates Stadium.

For so long it looked like a performance that would not live long in the memory, but Arsenal put Palace to the sword late on after relying on their usual strengths this season early on.

Arsenal have scored 11 goals from attacking set-pieces in the Premier League this season, the joint-most along with Everton. They conceded just one goal from corners in their first 14 Premier League games but have since shipped four in the past six matches.

Able to intensify their training sessions in a sunnier climate, Arsenal worked on both their attacking and defensive set-piece routines in Dubai.

The man leading sessions on corners and free-kicks is set-piece coach Nicolas Jover, who helped make Arsenal one of the best set-piece teams in the Premier League before their recent drop-off. Jover has worked wonders since joining Arsenal in 2021.

He likes to keep sessions short (ideally 10 to 15 minutes long) to ensure he has players’ attention. His instructions are clear and simple, while Arsenal have even sometimes erected a giant screen at the side of the training pitch to play clips on.

A two-week break and some sun in Dubai has helped lift the gloom around Arsenal.

Back-to-back Premier League defeats and an FA Cup exit to Liverpool preceded their warm-weather training camp, but Arsenal still believe they can achieve something special this season.

After three defeats on the spin, the Gunners looked in desperate need of a break, and the eight-day training camp offered them the chance to reset.

Nowhere was that needed more than in attack, where Arsenal had 61 shots in their last three games but scored just once.

Gabriel Jesus has struggled with form and fitness all season, and the same goes for fellow Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli.

At this stage last season, Jesus and Martinelli had scored 12 goals between them. So far this campaign, they have managed just five.

Hodgson: Palace won't be relegated

Roy Hodgson insists Crystal Palace will not get sucked into a relegation fight.

Palace have won just one of their last 11 matches and head to Arsenal just five points above the drop zone.

The injury-hit Eagles are 14th in the table and have finished between 10th and 15th position every season since their return to the top flight in 2013. They went out of the FA Cup on Wednesday as Everton beat them 1-0 in a third-round replay at Goodison Park.

Asked what his side have left to play for this season, now that they are out of both cup competitions, a frosty Hodgson replied: “What do Brentford hope for, what do Fulham hope for, what do [Nottingham] Forest hope for?"

He added: “I don’t see us [finishing] in the top six. The players we have, the way we are, the organisation and group of players we’re working with, I’m certain they’ll get us clear of relegation.

“Around us we’ve got a lot of teams in the same neck of the woods as we are, but a few are a few points above us at the moment.”

Frank confident Toney will stay

Thomas Frank has said that Brentford have not yet received any bids for Ivan Toney, amid interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

The striker will make his first-team return this evening against Nottingham Forest after an eight-month ban for breaching gambling rules.

Toney has said it is "obvious" that he wants to play for "a big club", and Frank will be relieved when the January window closes.

“It is 99 point something [per cent clear] that he will stay here,” said Frank. “But football is crazy, so you never know what is going to happen tomorrow. He is very committed to help the team.

Timber could return this season

Mikel Arteta is hopeful that Jurrien Timber could still play for Arsenal again this season.

The defender suffered a serious knee injury back in August when making his Premier League debut for the Gunners against Nottingham Forest and has been out of action ever since.

However, the 22-year-old has now begun working on the grass and did some basic passing drills last week during Arsenal’s warm-weather training camp in Dubai.

It has raised hope that Timber may return this season and give Arsenal a boost during the run-in.

“There is a possibility, but at the moment he’s still very far from competing,” said Arteta, when quizzed on Timber’s potential comeback.

“That’s the realistic picture of it. Are we hopeful that he could have a realistic impact before the end of the season?

“If everything goes well, it looks like that might happen. At the moment though it’s too early to make that call.”

Hodgson: Palace pushing for signings

Roy Hodgson says Crystal Palace are "working hard" to complete "at least a couple" of signings in the January transfer window.

Palace, like the majority of Premier League clubs, are yet to sign any players so far this month, but they have been linked with a number of targets.

The Eagles are keen to strengthen in a number of areas, including at full-back and in central midfield. Hodgson admitted this week that he would like to work with Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, but acknowledged the player will have plenty of interested parties.

Standard Sport understands that Palace continue to monitor long-term centre-back targets such as Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera and Peterborough's Ronnie Edwards, but reinforcements in that position may have to wait until the summer.

“I can’t give any update in regard to any player, but [sporting director] Doug Freedman and [chairman] Steve Parish are working hard to try to bring a couple of players at least into the club," Hodgson said.

Smith Rowe to stay at Arsenal

Arsenal have no plans to loan Emile Smith Rowe to West Ham and the midfielder is determined to fight for his place.

The Hammers are in the market for attacking reinforcements and have expressed an interest in Smith Rowe.

The 23-year-old has battled injury problems over the past 18 months and has started just one Premier League game this season.

Arsenal, however, have no interest in loaning out Smith Rowe and he is also focused on winning back his place in the Gunners team.

“I’m really happy with Emile,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on Friday. “He’s in the right trajectory. Now, he’s settled, he’s training really well and you know I'm not going to talk about individual situations.

“Emile is Emile. We know he’s got incredible qualities and we're really happy to have him. What he needs now is chances to put all the desire and quality that he has on the pitch. In order to do that we have to give him minutes.”

Both teams have had time to take stock of their seasons thus far with the winter break, and both will know improvement is needed.

Mikel Arteta's Gunners face a tall order to keep pace with Liverpool and Manchester City, and beating Palace is already non-negotiable. The joy of Roy Hodgson's return late last season is already a distant memory, and another relegation fight is not out of the question.

Fighting at opposite ends of the table, and with a bit of rest under their belts, this should be a fairly routine day at the office for Arsenal.

Dean Henderson will get the nod to start in goal over Sam Johnstone.

Henderson’s first run in the Palace starting lineup since his £20million summer move from Manchester United came during a five-game spell over the festive period, when Johnstone was out through injury.

Johnstone returned for Wednesday’s FA Cup third-round replay defeat at Everton, but manager Roy Hodgson has now confirmed that Henderson will take over once more at Arsenal.

Addressing the fitness of the rest of his squad, Hodgson said on Friday: “The ones out before the game on Wednesday are still out.

"Joel Ward, Rob Holding, Cheick Doucoure — are still out. And Michael [Olise].”

Arsenal hope to have Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko available for this afternoon's clash.

The pair both missed the Gunners’ FA Cup third-round defeat by Liverpool on January 7.

Jesus is the most likely to return against Palace as he trained with the group out in Dubai during Arsenal's warm-weather training camp after being sidelined with a knee issue.

Zinchenko has not played since the Gunners lost to West Ham on December 28 and has been battling a calf problem.

“We still have a few unfortunately on that list that we haven’t managed to get back yet, but hopefully they are much closer and some of them are in a better place than we expected,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on Friday.

“Individually I'm not going to tell you exactly how everybody is, but we are still missing a few. We are touch and go with a few, that’s what I would say.”
