Arsenal vs Tottenham - LIVE!

Arsenal and Tottenham maintained their unbeaten starts to the Premier League season with a thrilling 2-2 draw in the north London derby. Heung-min Son cancelled out Cristian Romero’s own goal before half-time, and the Spurs captain was on target after the break too as he scored within two minutes of the restart following Bukayo Saka’s penalty.

In a fixture that so often delivers drama and entertainment, it was the Gunners who took the lead, Saka causing Spurs plenty of problems in the early stages and involved in the opening goal as his curling strike was turned into his own net by Romero. Gabriel Jesus wasted a huge chance to double the lead and it proved costly, as Arsenal saw their advantage wiped out before the break. James Maddison skipped away from Saka and his low ball into the middle was divered into the far corner by Son.

Romero was again involved in a way he would rather not be as Arsenal edged back in front within ten minutes of the second-half. He handled Ben White’s shot and, after a VAR review, the penalty was given. Saka held his nerve to lift his spot-kick down the middle, as Guglielmo Vicario’s dive took him out of the way. That lead did not last two minutes. Almost straight from the kick-off, Jorginho was robbed as he took an age on the ball, Maddison driving into the space. He slid the pass through to Son, who cushioned a cool finish past David Raya to leave the Emirates stunned.

Ange Postecoglou had predicted there would be two possible storylines from his first north London derby, writes Dan Kilpatrick.

If his Tottenham side won, they would be declared emphatically on the right track; but if they were beaten by a more experienced Arsenal, it would show how far they still have to go.

In the end, it was a little of column A and little from column B, as Spurs earned an exhilarating 2-2 draw, demonstrating their remarkable progress under the Australian but confirming there remains work to do.

Arteta provides Rice update

Mikel Arteta hopes the back injury that forced Declan Rice off during Sunday’s north London derby is not serious.

The midfielder will now be assessed by Arsenal ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup game at Brentford.

And asked if there is any danger that Rice could be out for a while, Arteta said: “Hopefully not.

“We have to assess him. It’s strange that a player like him asked to come off because he was uncomfortable. Hopefully not, but let’s see.

“He had some discomfort in his back. He was telling us during the first-half that he was uncomfortable.”

The north London derby felt like a game where Declan Rice would underline his importance to Arsenal - and so it proved, writes Simon Collings.

Unfortunately for Mikel Arteta, it was not in the manner he would have wished. Rice was conspicuous by his absence in the second-half, with Arsenal’s midfield struggling without the England international - who went off with an injury.

His replacement, Jorginho, was sloppy dispossessed for Tottenham’s equaliser to make it 2-2 and it summed up the Gunners’ malaise.

If there is one weakness in Arsenal’s defence, it can be argued that it is Oleksandr Zinchenko. The Ukrainian is excellent on the ball, however at times he can be vulnerable defensively.

Tottenham will look to exploit that, with Dejan Kulusevski very good at working space. The Swede is able to move his opposite number inside or out, and Zinchenko will need to be wary about tucking into midfield.

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou has insisted his side’s performance is more important than the result this afternoon, as he vowed not to abandon his ultra-attacking approach against Arsenal.

“We’re five games in, I understand that for many people, they will see this as our first real test and I get that,” Postecoglou said. “It is pretty easy, you could almost write two stories now: if we are successful, great we’re on the right track. If we’re not, we’ve still got a long way to go.

“For me what is going to be more important is how much of our football I see in a big game like this. How much of us can I see against a top opponent?

“That will give me the biggest indicator of where we’re at but ultimately we’ll still be six games into a new cycle, a new group of players, a very young group of players.”

Martin Odegaard says it was an “easy decision” to agree a new contract with Arsenal and believes the club can win major trophies after tying down the core of its squad.

Arsenal captain Odegaard signed a five-year deal this week until 2028, giving the Gunners a major boost ahead of the north London derby. The midfielder is the latest key player to commit his future to Arsenal, following Aaron Ramsdale, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli and William Saliba.

“It was an easy decision for me,” said the Norwegian. “This feels like home and what we are doing is something I really want to be a part of and to improve even more and take new steps to achieve some great things together.

“That is the big dream, the big goal, to win things with the club. That’s why I have signed here as well, because we can achieve some great things.

“What we’re doing is really special and the players see what the manager wants to do and how the club is progressing, the connection we now have with the fans. It’s a no-brainer for the players to be part of that.

Arteta sends Arsenal warning over Spurs threat

Mikel Arteta has warned his Arsenal side about underestimating Tottenham now they are without Harry Kane.

The England captain, who joined Bayern Munich in the summer, is the record goalscorer in north London derbies with 14 goals in 19 appearances.

“He was obviously a special player and everything went through him,” said Arteta. “He was the one that glided everything together.

“(Tottenham) did it in many different ways from many different areas of the pitch. Now it’s a bit different. They have a different style from the last two coaches as well.

“They, for sure, have some specificity in certain moments that they make with certain players so I think it’s a very different team. They have many other qualities and many other players who can create and make a difference in the game. Probably it’s a big change for them but they’ve adapted really well.”

Postecoglou dismisses Arteta comparisons

Ange Postecoglou has played down comparisons with Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and says trying to replicate another manager’s style would be as futile as copying a Picasso.

Postecoglou first encountered Arteta, 17 years his junior, when he was in charge of Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos and the Spaniard was assisting Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

“I spent a week at City when I first got the Yokohama job because they were part of the [City Football] Group and were generous enough to invite me in,” Postecoglou said. “I didn’t speak to anyone but I observed training and you could see then how passionate Mikel was about the game and that he was itching to become a manager himself.

“In terms of similarities… I’m 58, he’s whatever. I’ve had 26 years, he’s five years into it. He’s managed in one country, I’ve managed in a few. I’m not sure how he’s got a great head of hair… He’s a lot fitter than I am. I don’t know mate, there’s not a lot of threads I can sort of join between us.

“Even in the way his team plays. Yes, he does have a very attacking philosophy but it’s different from mine and that’s the beauty of the game. That’s what you love about it. It’s why you can’t copy.

“If you’re an artist and you see a Picasso, yeah you can copy it, but it’s not going to be a Picasso is it?”

Levy: Spurs have Kane buy-back clause

Daniel Levy has reiterated that Tottenham would be able to re-sign Harry Kane if the England captain targeted a return to the Premier League.

The 30-year-old - also England’s record scorer - has enjoyed a blistering start to life at Bayern Munich, netting his first hat-trick yesterday to continue a superb run of goalscoring form.

But talk over a potential future return to Tottenham has already been circulating this week after chairman Levy revealed during a rare appearance at a fans’ forum on Tuesday that Spurs had inserted a buy-back clause into the deal with Bayern.

Levy was quizzed about that clause again during a subsequent interview with Bloomberg, remaining tight-lipped on the specific details of the agreement but reiterating that Tottenham would have the capacity to re-sign Kane if the player one day desired a return to N17.

“The actual precise detail of the contract with Bayern Munich should remain confidential,” Levy said. “All I would say is if that one day Harry wanted to come back to the Premier League, and he wanted to come to Tottenham, we would have the ability to purchase him.”

Arteta: Dropping Ramsdale has been tough

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says it has been uncomfortable dropping Aaron Ramsdale, with summer signing David Raya starting the last two games and keeping cleaning sheets in both.

“Maybe I look [comfortable] but in your tummy when you have players sitting and you have to announce the line-up, it is one of the hardest things,” said Arteta.

“Players feel valued and happy when they play. And when they don’t it is very difficult. You want them to feel loved and trusted and the way to do it is to play them.

“It is hard, but with other players it is the same. Aaron is an exceptional character, he has got this charisma and this aura around him, and we all know that and I fully understand that.

“I understand that and it is very difficult with every player. And I suffer and I care about every player who is not playing but this is the competition and this is my job to make decisions in the best possible way for the team.

“He (Ramsdale) has been very supportive and really good around the place and that is what I expect from every single player as when you are on the field, there is someone else who is not. So it goes both ways. So far he has been really, really good.”
