Arsenal vs Wolves LIVE!

A fantastic week for Arsenal has been capped with a win over Wolves at Emirates Stadium. After a late victory away to Brentford was followed up by a superb six-goal thrashing of RC Lens, the Gunners are now four points clear atop the Premier League with another win this afternoon.

Mikel Arteta had no new injury worries ahead of the game but made one change to his team in north London. Kai Havertz was benched after threatening to finally make himself a regular fixture in the line-up after goals in back-to-back games, whereas Takehiro Tomiyasu started while excelling in a run of games at right-back.

Arsenal banked a fifth win in a row, leaving Wolves lodged in mid-table. Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard scored early before a low-key second half was livened up by a Matheus Cunha strike five minutes from time.

Arsenal vs Wolves highlights

  • GOAL! Saka strikes early for Arsenal

  • GOAL! Odegaard adds superb second

Big Arsenal penalty call as Dan Bentley catches Eddie Nketiah with an unconvincing clearance from a corner. Think it was a fair play of the ball, though.

A booking for a member of the Arsenal backroom staff, don't think it was Mikel Arteta - who is one away from a ban.

Think it was assistant coach Carlos Cuesta.

There were some protests after a tackle amid that attack went unpunished.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 83 mins

16:49 , Marc Mayo

SAVE!

Better from Kai Havertz to win the ball up the field and Leandro Trossard is slipped in by Martin Odegaard...

Dan Bentley comes out well to smother the shot before parrying Bukayo Saka's follow-up!

Straight on the attack themselves, Wolves send a deflected effort straight at the goalkeeper.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 80 mins

16:46 , Marc Mayo

Kai Havertz straight into the midfield to give the ball away in his own half.

Ben White straight into the defence to head the cross clear under pressure.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 78 mins

Ben White comes on for Takehiro Tomiyasu, who has been superb of late but has an issue with his left leg.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 77 mins

16:43 , Marc Mayo

Gabriel Martinelli next to depart as Kai Havertz enters the fray.

That could move Leandro Trossard out wide.

Not too defensive for Arsenal, who could have reinforced the midfield with Mohamed Elneny off the bench.

Just as that change happens however we have Takehiro Tomiyasu on the ground calling for treatment.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 76 mins

16:41 , Marc Mayo

CLOSE!

Bukayo Saka has time to pick his spot from 20 yards out, he swings it just too high and the ball smacks the stanchion!

Swift touch around the corner from Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli is sent into the box...

The Brazilian looks to cross but it pops up off a Wolves foot and Dan Bentley grabs it. Just about sums up a low-key second half.

First booking of the game for William Saliba, who loses a battle with Hwang Hee-chan and pulls him down.

Hugo Bueno off for ex-Tottenham man Matt Doherty and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde is replaced by Pablo Sarabia in two attacking changes from the away team.

Bukayo Saka almost collects a Takehiro Tomiyasu pass into the box, a replica of the first goal, but he's too heavy with his touch.

Wolves about to make two changes.

Simon Collings at Emirates Stadium

16:25 , Marc Mayo

The game has lost its tempo, which is probably a relief for Wolves. Arsenal just going through the motions really, but they need to be wary about being sloppy.

One goal and this gets nervy.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 58 mins

16:23 , Marc Mayo

Leandro Trossard fancies it from range - fired over.

Around the grounds

16:22 , Marc Mayo

All three Premier League games are now at 2-0 to the home team.

Neal Maupay and Ben Mee have struck for Brentford against Luton, while Burnley still lead Sheffield United.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 55 mins

16:21 , Marc Mayo

That was a reminder that Arsenal really need a third goal to be certain of a calm finish to this game.

But Wolves are looking a lot more comfortable now than at this point of the first half...

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | Kick-off!

We're back underway in north London!

A welcome face at the Emirates

16:07 , Marc Mayo

Injured Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber is at the ground for this one.

Around the grounds

16:05

Sheffield United are two goals and a man down at Burnley as their nightmare season continues.

Luton will be pleased with a point at Brentford, they're goalless at the break.

Wolves not down and out yet

16:03 , Marc Mayo

Gary O'Neil can take heart from a fairly decent response to going 2-0 down but Wolves are yet to test David Raya at all.

Gathering more of a threat in attack will surely leave them exposed on the counter, too.

All good for the Gunners

16:00 , Marc Mayo

Not quite the 5-0 they managed after 45 minutes in midweek, but Arsenal are marching towards a four-point lead at the top of the table.

Bukayo Saka broke into the box after some neat build-up play to score early on and Martin Odegaard doubled their lead by the quarter-hour mark, after more sweet build-up play.

It's been a touch flat since but another goal surely ends this as a contest.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | Half time!

15:55 , Marc Mayo

William Saliba heads clear a late free-kick into the box and that's the break.

Arsenal are 2-0 up!

Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard with the goals inside the first 15 minutes.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 53 mins

15:54 , Marc Mayo

Leandro Trossard fires wide from range to cap a rather quiet end to the half from Arsenal, as Hwang Hee-chan almost sneaks in behind up the other end.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 51 mins

15:51 , George Flood

Well into the seven minutes of first-half stoppage time now at the Emirates.

Wolves have no answers for the Gunners as half-time approaches.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 42 mins

15:43 , Marc Mayo

That will add a few minutes onto stoppage time.

Back underway with a goal kick as Max Kilman prepares to return to the fold.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 39 mins

15:40 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Bukayo Saka launches a deep cross which goes over Gabriel's head before Gabriel Jesus fails to make contact to make it 3-0.

That might have been called back for offside, depending on whether Gabriel actually touched the ball or not.

And a delay to the restart as Wolves skipper Max Kilman is down.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 37 mins

15:38 , Marc Mayo

POST!

Arsenal counter through Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli bounces a shot onto the far post!

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 36 mins

15:38 , Marc Mayo

Nelson Semedo gets the better of Oleksandr Zinchenko to run into the Arsenal half...

It looks like a possible three on two for Wolves but Gabriel Martinelli races back to defend impeccably - and wins a throw!

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 35 mins

15:36 , Marc Mayo

Ten minutes until the break and Arsenal have not had much of an attack for a short while.

A third goal will surely kill this game and allow them to plan for Tuesday's trip to Luton.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 33 mins

15:34 , Marc Mayo

Looks a bit harsh as Martin Odegaard is penalised for a tackle on Matheus Cunha. Replays show the referee got it right, he was just second to the ball.

A chance for Tommy Doyle to pump a cross into the box, which nearly reaches Toti Gomes! Goal kick.

Around the grounds

15:33 , Marc Mayo

Burnley have a two-goal lead over Sheffield United in their relegation showdown at Turf Moor.

Luton and Brentford are goalless across the capital.

Simon Collings at Emirates Stadium

15:32 , Marc Mayo

Plenty of praise, rightly, for Arsenal's attacking play - but their defensive work has been excellent too.

The front unit are press so well and Raya hasn't had a save to make yet.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 30 mins

15:31 , Marc Mayo

Wolves haven't lost a game by more than one goal since September 16, can they bounce back into this one?

A little bit more possession recently but David Raya has been untested.

Leandro Trossard pops up again, this time in defence, to grab Matheus Cunha's ball forward.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 27 mins

15:29 , Marc Mayo

Dangerous free-kick spot for Leandro Trossard to swing it in, Wolves deal with first ball well before another block denies Declan Rice's drive.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 26 mins

15:27 , Marc Mayo

Two blocks in a row from Wolves deny Gabriel Martinelli then Leandro Trossard.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 25 mins

15:26 , Marc Mayo

Handball from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde as he bounces around his marker to run at the Arsenal goal.

Peter Bankes is on his case, free-kick.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 23 mins

When it rains it pours.

Jose Sa claims a cross but kicks it into touch and Dan Bentley will replace him in goal for Wolves.

The 30-year-old has not played in the league this season.

Simon Collings at Emirates Stadium

Jose Sa looks in trouble here. The Wolves keeper makes a good save, but he is grabbing his back and wincing a lot. O'Neil turning to his bench.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 21 mins

15:22 , Marc Mayo

CLOSE!

Leandro Trossard delightfully pops up to take down a Martin Odegaard cross that wasn't really for him.

He manages to poke an effort goalwards but Jose Sa is out well to smother it.

They want a statement win for the title race.

Arsenal 2-0 Wolves | 15 mins

Mikel Arteta backs VAR to be a success

14:20 , Marc Mayo

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told the Premier League to persevere with the use of VAR and believes it can be a success in the future.

Arteta said: “No, I think we can improve it and we are trying to do that.

“All those things that are happening I think are probably necessary to improve it and we have to take it that way. It has been a big change.

“Technology is taking a huge responsibility in games and it needs time. If we use it the right way, we are listening to people, we are open, we are humble and we are trying to be constructive, I think we will get to a really, really good place.”

Gary O'Neil relishing underdog status

13:53 , Marc Mayo

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil wants his team to take heart from earlier wins over Tottenham and Man City for today's game.

He said: “I always go into games confident. I go into games extremely confident, but also realistic in how we need to approach them.

"I know we have played Manchester City at home, we’ve played Tottenham, who had a few key players missing on that day, Manchester City had a couple missing and we were pretty much at full strength in them, so it’s a slight shift in that because we’re the ones who have suffered a few suspensions and injuries.

“We go there with slightly less numbers than we would usually have, but what an incredible opportunity for us to go to a tough place, and I’m really looking forward to taking the lads to a real tough place and see where we can go.”

Martin Odegaard sends Arsenal fans message in programme notes

13:41

"This time of year is so important in the Premier League. You cannot afford to switch off for a single day in December – it’s so intense.

"I love it, to be honest. It gets tighter and tighter and the main thing is to win the games and get the points, however you can do it. You have to put yourself in that position to be able to fight at the top at the end of the season, and this is the time of year you can do that.

"In December especially, there is no time at all to think about anything other than football!

"Players will get tired at all teams, so it’s about being mentally strong. Who copes with it best will be rewarded. So we need to make sure we recover well, prepare well, rest when we can, keep our focus and push every day.

"Then when it comes to matchday, make it all count."
