Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Sets Michael Westmore For Vanguard Award

Michael Westmore is ready for his career closeup.

The Mask Oscar winner and nine-time Emmy winner will receive the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild’s 2024 Vanguard Award at the 11th annual MUAHS Awards in February.

Westmore’s five-decade résumé includes a record 45 Emmy noms and ranges from the breathtaking beauty of Elizabeth Taylor to the bloody Rocky series and the Romulans in multiple Star Trek series. His artistry has captivated audiences and set the standard for makeup and hairstyling in film and TV.

The Vanguard Award is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to the make-up and hair styling industry and has left a lasting impact on the craft.

“His contributions and expertise to our industry are unparalleled,” MUAHS Business Rep Karen J. Westerfield said of Westmore. “IATSE Local 706 Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild. “His unwavering encouragement and guidance to elevate our members, along with the Westmore Legacy, will continue to inspire future generations of Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists. … We recognize him as the Man, the Myth, the Mentor — Michael Westmore.”

He created the memorable disguises for Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum and Frank Sinatra for the 1963 film The List of Adrian Messenger and went on to become the preferred makeup man for Taylor and Bobby Darin and Elizabeth Taylor.

Westmore transformed Sylvester Stallone into Rocky Balboa for the Rocky series and Robert De Niro into Jake LaMotta for Raging Bull and created hundreds of alien characters for more than 600 episodes of Star Trek from The Next Generation to Enterprise.

He also worked on such movies and TV shows as The Munsters, Rosemary’s Baby, Eleanor and Franklin, New York, New York and Blade Runner, among others.

Chartered in 1937, the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE, Local 706) includes more than 2,100 industry pros worldwide. It will hand out the MUAHS Awards on February 18 at the Beverly Hilton.
