Asean Para Games: Singapore duo earn first boccia gold
SINGAPORE — Boccia duo Aloysius Gan and Toh Sze Ning clinched Singapore's first gold in the sport at the 2022 Asean Para Games (APG) in Solo, Indonesia, on Friday (5 August).
The pair defeated Thailand's Akkadej Choochuenklin and Ladamanee Kla-han of Thailand 3-1 in the final to earn the gold.
Boccia is a precision ball sport, in which the competing para-athletes try to roll their balls closest to the target ball. It is practised in more than 50 countries by athletes with cerebral palsy or related neurological conditions involving a wheelchair.
Meanwhile, para-swimmer Wong Zhi Wei won his second gold medal at the Games when he clocked 27.22sec in the men's 50m freestyle (S13) to edge out Vietnam's Tran Quoc Phi (27.66sec) and Indonesia's Marinus Melianus Yowei (27.76sec).
Wong had also won the men's 100m free (S13) on Wednesday.
On the final day of the para-swimming competition, Singapore added three silvers and a bronze to its total haul. Sophie Soon (women's 50m free (S12)), Colin Soon (men's 50m breaststroke (SB12)) and Janelle Tong (women's 400m free (S10)) each took silver, while Danielle Moi was third in the women's 50m free (S14).
