Attorney Who Helped Free Britney Spears From Conservatorship Moves On, Says He Was Honored to ‘Protect’ Artist (Exclusive)

“I was honored to work with and protect Britney, who is and will always be an icon," Mathew Rosengart tells PEOPLE exclusively

Mathew Rosengart, the attorney who helped free Britney Spears from a 13-year conservatorship in 2021, is moving on.

“I was honored to work with and protect Britney, who is and will always be an icon, and most specifically, to have helped restore the fundamental rights and civil liberties that were stripped from her, which was always our focus," Rosengart tells PEOPLE on Monday, June 24.

With no active litigation involving Spears conservatorship at present, Rosengart is shifting his time and focus to other clients, per The Hollywood Reporter.

After Spears' conservatorship under her father Jamie Spears was suspended in September 2021, it was terminated on Nov. 12, 2021, thanks in part to Rosengart's efforts.

Following the termination, Rosengart addressed the media and the pop stars' supporters outside the courthouse, calling it a "monumental day" for her.

"What's next for Britney is up to one person — and this is the first time we can say this in a decade. It's up to Britney," he said. "Britney, as of today, is a free woman."

In an Instagram post published three months later in February 2022, the singer thanked Rosengart.

"This man has turned my life around … So many exciting projects ahead !!!!" the "Toxic" singer, then 40, wrote. "We accidentally matched for lunch !!!! Thank you for being so kind and respectful to me always!!!!!!"

Rosengart continued to represent Spears in subsequent legal matters, including settling the dispute between Britney and Jamie over the legal fees pertaining to the conservatorship battle in April 2024.

"Although the conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, her wish for freedom is now truly complete," Rosengart said in a statement at the time. "As she desired, her freedom now includes that she will no longer need to attend or be involved with court or entangled with legal proceedings in this matter.”

“I cannot comment on any specifics as the settlement is confidential. Jamie is thrilled that this is all behind him. He loves his daughter very much and everything he has ever done has been to protect and support her,” Jamie's attorney, Alex Weingarten, responded in a statement to PEOPLE. “It is unfortunate that some irresponsible people in Britney’s life chose to drag this on for as long as it has.”

The settlement was effectively the last dispute between the singer, 42, and her father, 71.

Reflecting upon the last three years with his client, Rosengart told THR, "As I’ve always said, the credit goes to Britney."
