Australian Prime Minister Proposes to Girlfriend on Valentine's Day — and 'She Said Yes'

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Valentine's Day that he and partner Jodie Haydon have gotten engaged, after sharing a heartwarming selfie where she showed off her new ring.

"She said yes ❤️," the 60-year-old politician captioned an Instagram post, which featured a look at the couple smiling big for a selfie.

After the pair had dinner at an Italian restaurant, per the Associated Press, Albanese popped the question to Haydon, a financial services professional, with a ring that he helped design.

The proposal took place on a balcony at his residence, the Lodge, and made him the first Australian prime minister to get engaged while in office, the outlet noted.

The PM shared a video to Instagram, showing the pair hold hands as they walked toward reporters on Wednesday. Albanese then thanked Australians for the "warm and generous messages" the couple received.

"Jodie and I are excited and we're thrilled," he said. "It is such a joy to be able to share this news with people and it's wonderful that I've founded a partner who I want to spend the rest of my life with. And last night was a very, a great occasion here at the Lodge and we couldn't be more happy."

"I just want to thank everybody for such warm congratulations today, from our friends to our family, from people we don't know," Haydon added. "It's just been overwhelming but beautiful."

After being asked by a reporter if Albanese was expecting a "pre-election" wedding, the couple chuckled.

"It's only been 24 hours," Haydon responded.

"We're living in the moment," Albanese added. "A lot of planning and thought went into everything... We'll now have those discussions between us, which I think people would understand, and sort out those details. But we just want to live in the moment at this point."

According to the BBC, Albanese and his ex-wife — former New South Wales deputy premier Carmel Tebbutt — separated in 2019 after 19 years of marriage. They share 23-year-old Nathan Albanese. The outlet noted that the PM and Haydon reportedly met in 2020 and bonded over rugby at an event, and she eventually joined him on the campaign trail in 2022.

The pair have seen a positive response from friends and critics alike after the big proposal. Opposition leader Peter Dutton, per the AP, congratulated the couple in Parliament.

“We look forward to our version of the royal wedding some time in the near future,” Dutton said. “I’ll be there, throwing roses out in front of you, prime minister. Whatever it takes to get an invite to the gala wedding."
