Australian schoolgirls under police investigation for shoplifting at Orchard Road: report
SINGAPORE — A group of female Australian private-school students are being investigated by Singapore police after they were arrested on Sunday (13 November) for allegedly shoplifting from stores in Orchard Road.
CNA reported the police as saying they were alerted at 4.04pm on Sunday to a case of theft at 333A Orchard Road, which is the address of Mandarin Gallery.
Upon arrival, they arrested six teenagers aged 14 to 16, in relation to the case. Investigations are ongoing, police added.
According to CNA, the teenagers were female Year 10 students from Bacchus Marsh Grammar in Australia’s Victoria state, about 60 kilometres north of Melbourne. The private co-educational school has more than 3,000 students.
Australian media reported on Tuesday that the students had allegedly stolen lingerie from a Victoria’s Secret store at Mandarin Gallery, in addition to footwear from a Crocs store, .
Daily Mail Australia reported that the girls were caught on CCTV camera stashing away expensive lingerie from the store, before leaving without paying. The Herald Sun also said that the girls spent more than "10 hours in cells" after they were arrested, returning to their hotel at around 3.30am.
School principal confirms incident
Bacchus Marsh Grammar school principal Andrew Neal confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that “a small group of students have found themselves involved in an incident in Orchard Road”.
He added that they are part of a group of 18 students who are in Singapore for a regional netball competition that includes matches with the Singapore Sports School.
“The police have been firm, fair and thorough and the school is appreciative of their professionalism,” the principal said.
He added that the students are currently under the direct care of school staff members and that he looks forward to them returning with the rest of the group.
