Auxiliary police officer fires two shots at vehicle at Tuas Checkpoint

Tuas Checkpoint

An Auxiliary Police Officer (APO) fired two shots at a vehicle suspected to be used for cigarette smuggling at the Second Link Bridge near the International Boundary (IB) before Tuas Checkpoint on Tuesday night (27 Oct).

No one was injured in the incident, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a statement Wednesday (28 Oct).

ICA officers observed that four vehicles had stopped near the IB in the direction towards Singapore and two APOs proceeded to check the vehicles. As the officers approached, two of the vehicles made a sudden U-turn and headed towards Malaysia.

The other two vehicles complied initially with the APOs’ instruction to proceed towards Tuas Checkpoint. But one of the vehicles reversed against the flow of traffic towards the officers. One of the APOs fired two shots at the vehicle but it continued to head towards Malaysia.

The driver of the remaining vehicle was detained at Tuas Checkpoint. Initial investigations indicated that the persons in the vehicles were involved in the smuggling of cigarettes into Malaysia.

The Police are investigating the matter. ICA reminded motorists and travellers to comply with the instructions of its officers and APOs at the checkpoints.
