Avengers 5 writer appears to spoil MCU return

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is set to bring Namor back into the equation, after terrorising Wakanda in last year's Black Panther sequel.

Played by Tenoch Huerta (Narcos: Mexico), the mutant "fish man" eventually yielded to Letitia Wright's Shuri – the new Black Panther – and returned to his watery kingdom of Talokan, promising his cousin Namora that their new alliance would one day allow them to take over the surface world.

Jeff Loveness, writer of both Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and The Kang Dynasty, recently teased to ComicBook that he's "excited to write for Namor", effectively spoiling a major surprise.

Meanwhile, the screenwriter (also a member of the Rick and Morty staff) was asked if he's trying to emulate any of the other Avengers blockbusters with the upcoming fifth outing.

"Oh man. I think the Avenger movies... I'd almost go more for the comics," he noted.

"I mean, because the movies have been so fantastic, obviously. But I think Avenger comics are really cool because literally every issue opens with that credo of, 'And there came a day unlike any other.' And so the impetus of an Avengers movie or story is like, this is a day where we need these guys, and this is a threat that we cannot handle alone.

"This is a seismic shift in the world. This is a generational event. And our old generation is gone or retired or scattered. So it compels a new generation to step up."

Loveness went on to label superhero adventures as "the last movies that all of us watch together", before explaining: "So it gives us this chance to almost have a Frank Capra story, or it's almost like the chance to write Independence Day or Men in Black or something.

"You get to have a bit of a simple, cohesive, generational story and I really don't take that lightly. I really want to swing for the fences and I really want to tell a story that you can watch with your cousin, you go on a bad date and watch it somewhere.

"I want it to be a big American epic in the best sense of the word."

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty reaches cinemas on May 2, 2025. Avengers: Endgame is out now on DVD, Blu-ray, 3D, 4K and digital download, and is available on Disney+.
