Bafta nominations 2024 – live: Cillian Murphy, Emma Stone and more react to nods

The Bafta nominations for 2024 have been announced in London.

On Thursday (18 January), the nominated films, actors, directors and writers were revealed by former EE Rising Star nominees Naomi Ackie and Kingsley Ben-Adir during a live press conference.

This year’s Baftas, which are taking place in the UK’s capital city on 18 February, will be presented by actor David Tennant, in his first TV appearance since returning for a series of Doctor Who specials in 2023.

The only category that was announced ahead of the official line-up was the Rising Star award, nominees for which include Saltburn actor Jacob Elordi as well asThe Bear star Ayo Edebiri, whose film credits include Theatre Camp and Bottoms.

Films in contention include Oppenheimer, which swept the board at both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards earlier this month, as well as its blockbuster rival Barbie, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things, starring Emma Stone.

One film that was not named in several categories in May December, the Todd Haynes-directed drama starring Natalie Portman and Charles Melton. Both actors are expected to be in the Oscars race when nominations are revealed on 23 January but, upon the release of the Baftas longlist, many were shocked to discover the duo were nowhere to be seen.

Follow along with all the live updates, about this year’s Baftas nominations below

Fresh from his return to the TARDIS in a series of Doctor Who specials, Scottish actor David Tennant will be gracing the stage at the Royal Festival Hall in London’s Southbank Centre to host the Baftas ceremony on Sunday 18 February.

He said he was “honoured” to accept the position, with Baftas chief executive Jane Millichip praising his “warmth, charm, and mischievous wit”.

So, around midday, the Bafta nominations will start rolling in.

The usual names will be present – your Giamattis, Murphys, Blunts and Randolphs – but Bafta likes throwing in some curveballs, meaning there will some possible huge snubs.

We’re thinking Leonardo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper, Julianne Moore and Greta Lee will miss out today.

Rising Star nominees

09:40 , Jacob Stolworthy

The only Baftas category to have been announced so far is the Rising Star award, nominees for which include Saltburn actor Jacob Elordi as well as The Bear star Ayo Edebiri, whose film credits include Theatre Camp and Bottoms.

Is Past Lives past it?

10:10 , Jacob Stolworthy

One big question mark surrounds the awards chances for Past Lives, a film that quietly grew into something of a frontrunner last year, but has since been seemingly pushed to the bottom of the pack by other more brash releases.

Could writer-director Celine Song and lead stars Greta Lee and Teo Yoo get Bafta nominations today?

Films that have a look-in

10:40 , Jacob Stolworthy

At the Baftas, films that might not necessarily end up getting Oscar nominations excitingly receive nods. This is thanks to the two categories Outstanding British Film and Oustanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

This year, such films could include Rye Lane, Femme, How to Have Sex and Scrapper.

Top-penheimer

11:10 , Jacob Stolworthy

Oppenheimer is the film to beat this year, having won big at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Movie Awards.

At this stage, it’s difficult to see Christopher Nolan’s three-hour drama not sweeping the board at both the Baftas and the Oscars.

Incredibly – and criminally – the director has never won a single Bafta or Oscar before.

Check out our interview with Nolan, and Oppenheimer’s lead star Cillian Murphy, here:

Firstly, let’s hear it for Teo Yoo! The Past Lives actor has been nominated in the Leading Actor category for his tender turn in Celine Song’s film, which picked up a total of four nominations.

Nothing for Song or his co-star Greta Lee, though.

Vivian Oparah!

13:10 , Jacob Stolworthy

Big shout out to Vivian Oparah who has been nominated for a Leading Actress for the little film that could, Rye Lane.

She’s the beating heart of the film, so a nomination for Oparah has made us smile. She faces fierce competition from Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) and Emma Stone (Poor Things), which brings us onto our next point...

Where is Lily Gladstone?

13:25 , Jacob Stolworthy

While I do think Lily Gladstone is more of a supporting role in Killers of the Flower Moon, she is being widely tipped to not only be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars, but to win the award.

Following Emma Stone’s surprise win at the Critics Choice Awards earlier this week, could the Poor Things star be on her way to winning her second Oscar?

Danielle Brooks reacts

13:43 , Jacob Stolworthy

Brooks has been nominated in the Supporting Actress category for The Color Purple.

She said: “Thank you Bafta for this incredible honor. I feel so humbled to be recognized in this way. I have always felt the story of ‘Sofia’ and The Color Purple is a truly universal one – one of empowerment, resilience, connection, and healing.

“All of us in this world have gone on the journey of finding the strength to stand up for ourselves with pride and self-love. That is what I hope continues to resonate with everyone when they see this film, and I am grateful The Color Purple has not only personally impacted me in such a manner, but has also brought me to this amazing moment.

Andrew Scott fans are NOT happy

14:00 , Jacob Stolworthy

While Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers received six nominations, one of those – bizarelly – was not for Andrew Scott in the Best Actor category.

Suffice to say, his fans are not happy.

More reactions roll in

14:20 , Jacob Stolworthy

Molly Manning-Walker, the writer-director of How to Have Sex, has reacted to the film’s bafta nominations.

“What an honour to be nominated at the Baftas this year. It’s hard to imagine that a year ago, when editing the film, it would take us on this incredible journey. It has been nothing short of a dream. I’m so proud of our cast and crew. I feel particularly emotional about sharing this moment with other filmmaker friends. A special shout out to Charlotte and my Scrapper family.”

Rosamund Pike reacts to Bafta nomination

15:16 , Jacob Stolworthy

Saltburn actor Rosamund Pike, who has been nominated in the Supporting Actress category, said it is “bliss bliss bliss” to be recognised.

“It’s something uniquely special to be nominated for a Bafta. It happened once before. I thought realistically it might never happen again. And overjoyed that Jacob and Barry and our mad special film got recognition. Bliss Bliss Bliss.”

It’s Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s time to shine

15:45 , Jacob Stolworthy

Da’Vine Joy Randolph is sweeping the Supporting Actress category this year, and she is a firm favourite to win at the Baftas next month,

She called the nomination “mind blowing,” adding: “I am completely overjoyed to be in London today when the nominations were announced. To be included in this category with these formidable powerhouses is mind-blowing.

Poor Things crew comment on their nominations

16:15 , Jacob Stolworthy

Behind Oppenheimer, Poor Things is the most-nominated film and the cast and crew, including director Yorgos Lanthimos and lead star Emma Stone, have responded to the news.

“We are delighted with this recognition from Bafta for our amazing cast and creative team on Poor Things based on Alasdair Gray’s iconic novel. I

“t’s particularly gratifying that Bafta has recognised the work of our many talented UK-based heads of department across cinematography, costume design, makeup and hair, original score, production design and special visual effects.

Cillian Murphy is a Christopher Nolan fanboy ‘till the end

16:45 , Jacob Stolworthy

Irish actor Cillian Murphy is happy about Oppenheimer’s Baftas success.

He said: “I couldn’t be happier that the British Academy recognised so many of my collaborators on Oppenheimer, especially Chris Nolan.”

Thanks for following along with the nominations – and be sure to check back on Sunday 18 February when we’ll be covering the awards live.
