Baraka Ground Black Pepper Recalled Nationwide Due To Salmonella Risk

Another day, another food recall. According to an announcement from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, UBC Food Distributors in Dearborn Michigan is recalling Baraka brand ground black pepper because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The recalled ground pepper was distributed to retail stores nationwide, and sold in 7-ounce clear plastic packages marked with an expiration date of January 2026 on the back of the label. Additionally, the recalled pepper has a UPC code of 8 22514 26626 6.

Per the FDA, there have been no illnesses reported in connection with this recall to date.Still, shoppers who have purchased the now-recalled ground black pepper are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
This recall was initiated after the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) notified the FDA that some Baraka brand ground black pepper may be contaminated with Salmonella. The contamination was discovered after a routine state surveillance sample collected by the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets tested positive for Salmonella. As a result, production of the product has been suspended while FDA and UBC Food Distributors continue their investigation to identify the source of the problem.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Side effects for those infected with salmonella include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.
